This program will equip you with knowledge and skills to critically evaluate the capabilities and limitations of the latest emerging technologies and determine the ways they intersect with current law and policy.

The rapid emergence of new technologies is changing business models, disrupting existing law and policy and demanding new approaches to regulation.

Lawyers are increasingly expected to be both well-versed in emerging technologies and equipped to harness these technologies to drive innovative legal practice.

Policy managers must possess the skills to develop future-focused and fit-for-purpose regulation and policy that addresses the new challenges presented by disruptive technology.This program will prepare you with knowledge transferable between legal and policy contexts and capabilities to provide guidance, create legal frameworks, and give recommendations for policy formation to manage and adopt emerging technologies.

It addresses data security, access, sharing and storage policies and frameworks that consider key ethics, risk, and governance issues under Australian and international privacy laws.

It also emphasises the ability to assess new technologies in order to develop new tools and process to drive innovative practice within a business or organisation.The curriculum incorporates developing law and policy for emerging technologies, understanding data and privacy in our digital age, and driving innovative legal practice.

In addition, you have access to RMIT Online’s Future Skills short courses as part of your study in a related area to further deepen your understanding of cyber security from a risk and governance perspective, and specific emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain.Over the duration of this program you will participate in a variety of learning experiences which are designed to support you in developing the knowledge and skills to be well-versed in law and policy issues arising from impact of emerging technologies.

Learning and teaching approaches for this program may include webinars, problem-based learning and case studies.

Activities and tasks are designed to facilitate theory application and peer learning in a collaborative, open manner using online tools such as Slack and interactive discussion forums.

All assessable activities will be project based to enable you to graduate with a portfolio of projects as evidence of your learning.The program will equip legal and policy professionals to adapt to a legal and regulatory environment increasingly facing disruption and innovation.This program does not qualify you for admission to legal practice in Australia.

Entry requirements

Academic Requirements:

Prospective students would need to have:

  • An Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent, or higher-level qualification, in a related discipline from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Students who do not meet the above entry requirement for the Graduate Certificate may be considered for entry if they have five years relevant full-time work experience.

Learning outcomes

In this program you will learn and apply skills to analyse technology in order to give advice and recommendations for legal issues and policy formation. You will gain knowledge about the capabilities and limitations of current emerging technologies and how they intersect with current law and regulations. You will develop the critical thinking and analytical skills to assess and adopt new technologies to drive innovation and apply this through a variety of activity-based learning experiences.
