In this program you are invited to add to your knowledge of theory and practice in Art in Public Space.

You are given the opportunity to contribute to the diversity of practice in this field where you may explore commissioned or uncommissioned work and through this, contribute to the evolving practice in this field.This program is one of the first of its kind in the world and the most comprehensive in course content and structure.

It brings together both education and research and encourages active collaboration between art and design practitioners and the community.

You will address issues within art in public space that are central to current international cultural debate.You willl gain a broad theoretical and historical understanding of discourses and practices of public art examining current definitions of real and virtual public space and training you to deal with the practical and theoretical problems that arise from such definitions in relation to art.You’ll explore alternative views of how art is presented and received in the urban context and address questions such as:Where are the spaces that enable art to be an active interpretation, rather than decoration, of the city?

Who should define policies for public culture?

How can art negotiate the new spaces of the contemporary public sphere such as the internet?Graduates leave the program with the skills of a practising public artist or theorist with project management skills, creativity and leadership skills valued by a range of employers in the arts and beyond.

As a graduate of this program you willl be eligible to enrol in the Master of Arts (Art in Public Space).

Entry requirements

Academic entrance requirements: An Australian undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, or its equivalent. Applicants with significant work experience or professional practice may also be considered.

Extra requirements: Applicants must present their folio to a selection panel. Note: This program incurs additional costs.

Learning outcomes

As a graduate, you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

1. Engage in self-directed learning and independent research with an emphasis on art in public space practice to develop an individual and collaborative art practice and locate practices within an appropriate conceptual and theoretical context

2. Test, experiment and explore real and conceptual issues and develop key project management skills through innovative public practice and engagement with international and local industry

3. Critically examine global, social, cultural, environmental, and historical knowledge and contexts that inform public art practice

4. Communicate to a professional level the conceptual development of a body of work within the framework of contemporary public art practice

5. Research, analyse and synthesise information and select methods and resources to develop communication and work ready skills appropriate to the public art field

6. Engage in autonomous and collaborative continuous learning concerning new developments in cultural/artistic production and associated discourses in art in public spaces

7. Create and manage a safe, sustainable and effective project environment within public space both independently and with your peers

8. Produce a body of work that demonstrates a professional level of technical and conceptual excellence in a selected area (or areas) of contemporary public art practice.
