Graduate Diploma in Translating and Interpreting

This program has been designed for you to develop and enhance professional translating and/or interpreting skills.

It will develop your specialized knowledge of related theoretical approaches and industrial issues to prepare you to work as a professional translator and/or interpreter in both domestic and international contexts.The program is designed to ensure you will critically engage with relevant professional and theoretical debates and develop skills in translating and interpreting.

While acquiring this knowledge and skills you will learn to investigate emerging trends and apply these to your practice, including appropriate current technologies.

This suite of skills and experience will underpin and inform your research and critical assessment of complex industry directions and issues, as well as the academic discipline.

A capstone experience based on an individually negotiated professional practice project will enable you to work independently in a simulated environment and receive feedback from an experienced practitioner.

This project will synthesize your knowledge, connect theory and practice as well as demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.On completion of the program, you will automatically be eligible to access NAATI certification exam(s) for a translator and/or interpreter.

If you are successful in the certification exam(s), you will be able to work as a translator and/or interpreter across diverse fields within the public service, including legal, health, business, security and international relations.You will gain skills and knowledge in global contexts for research and life-long learning to enable you to confidently contribute to an industry that is always evolving.

You will use innovative applications of communication technology to support translating and/or interpreting and practice and gain insight into your own practice.

You will develop efficient work practices at high professional standards to allow you to plan, produce and deliver interpreting and translating projects.

Year One Semester One

Complete the following Three (3) Courses:

Program Breath Option Courses:

You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in any discipline.

If you have not completed an undergraduate degree, you may still be considered if you have significant relevant work experience in interpreting or translating or in the use of bilingual language skills. If you wish for your work experience to be considered, you must submit a CV and a personal statement detailing your relevant work experience.

Please note: You must indicate in your application the language combination you are applying for.

Domestic applicants only: You will be selected competitively for all languages based on your GPA, relevant experience and the results of any selection tasks you are required to complete.

Selection tasks (domestic)

To meet the language other than English (LOTE) requirement, you must to have completed an AQF level 7 Bachelor degree (or overseas equivalent) in your nominated LOTE. If you do not meet this requirement you must complete the LOTE test.

Selection tasks (international)

• If your bachelor degree is in English you must complete a LOTE test, which includes reading, writing and translating from your second language into your first language (one of them should be English). The program may also make arrangement for a brief interview if it deems necessary.
• If your bachelor degree is in LOTE you must satisfy the English language requirements below.
• You may be required to complete an English test, which includes reading, writing and translating from your second language into your first language (one of them should be English). The program may also make arrangement for a brief interview if it deems necessary.
• You may meet the English requirements if you have completed an English proficiency test within the last two years, achieving:
• IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
• TOEFL (Paper Based Test): minimum score of 580 (TWE 4.5)
• TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 92 (with minimum of 20 in all sections)
• Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
• Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

• If you do not have prior study or it was completed in languages other than English or not the LOTE you are seeking to study translating and/or interpreting with the program, you must complete a LOTE and English test.

As a graduate of this program you will be able to:

• Critically reflect on and apply abstract concepts and knowledge of languages, cultures and research methods in order to facilitate communication across cultures and languages.
• Use appropriate cognitive, technical and creative skills to resolve intralingual and interlingual issues to transfer the communicative intent of spoken or written discourse.
• Research, critically analyse, theorise and apply a range of approaches to translating and interpreting, based on relevant contemporary theories, and apply to a substantial research-based project and current practice.
• Apply high level professional communication skills in multi-lingual environments.
• Reflect on and develop your personal practice to maintain current local and global professional standards and practices, and to extend and challenge industry knowledge.
