The MC172 Master of Landscape Architecture provides the highest level of qualification for aspiring landscape architects.
The program equips you with the skills to become a leader and innovator in landscape architectural practice.
The program explores landscape as a medium that exists at all scales, from micro to macro, from garden to city, from political to infrastructural, from social to economic;
and as a medium specific to site, time, and process.
The program will engage you profoundly with the discipline of landscape architecture as one that can respond to the challenges of a complex rapidly changing world through innovative design at the juncture of the urban and natural environments.
Endowing you with the tools for independent thought, and the ability to question and act, the masters program enables you to extend landscape architectural practice, enhance the creation and publication of landscape architectural knowledge, and augment the discipline’s relevance, community engagement, and leadership capabilities.Design research projects undertaken within the masters program sit at a contemporary and international level.
They are pursued as a means of understanding the role and responsibilities of landscape architects at a global level and the precise application of landscape architecture in local situations.
Innovative design practice and thinking is developed and extended through a range of advanced design research studios which both contribute to and are informed by contemporary landscape architectural discourse and interrelated fields of history, theory, ecology, and technology.
The final year of study centres around the rigorous development and refinement of a significant independently generated design research project.
Pursued over the full year, this capstone design research project represents a significant opportunity for you to define and explore your own design research trajectory within the design research studio framework.As a Master of Landscape Architecture graduate you will be prepared for the professional practice of landscape architecture and qualified to apply for accreditation with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.
This program equips you with an advanced body of knowledge and highly developed skills and abilities to enable you to pursue a career as a landscape architect able to work across local, national and international contexts;
and to work independently or as part of a large multidisciplinary team.
Career opportunities can be found in the public and private sectors;
in government organisations at federal, state and municipal level;
and in the offices of landscape architects, architects, planners, urban designers and engineers nationally and internationally.
From private gardens, historic estates and productive landscapes through to urban design projects and large open spaces such as parks, nature reserves and territorial systems, the parameters of professional landscape architectural practice are broad.

Entry requirements
You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in architecture or landscape architecture or a related design field. You will be selected competitively based on your grades and folio. International English language requirement
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

All applicants must complete and submit the selection task.
Learning outcomes
Successful completion of this program provides you with the practical and intellectual skills necessary for leading and innovating landscape architecture design practice. You will be provided with opportunities to demonstrate your commitment to learning, design research, and the profession through the study and experience of designing.
At the completion of this program you will be able to:
- Initiate, execute and situate substantial landscape architectural design research projects which demonstrate an engagement with urban and global complexities and an applied critical knowledge of the ecological, cultural, political, economic and ethical issues of landscape architecture
- Generate innovative outcomes for landscape architecture design projects at a range of scales through a mastery of practice which synthesizes creative, critical, analytical, reflective and theoretical thinking skills
- Effectively and fluently disseminate design research across disciplines to specialist and non-specialist audiences through a mastery of communication skills in a range of forms and media which shows a sophisticated understanding of the technical and theoretical frameworks of landscape architecture
- Express a high level of personal responsibility within independent design research projects combining an ability to employ a range of design processes for the generation and evaluation of design research projects
- Interrogate, question, engage and act in a broad range of social and cultural situations, and demonstrate effective teamwork and collaborative practices including an openness to others from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds
- Evidence the capacity to be an agent for change and innovation in the profession of landscape architecture in local and global contexts and in wider society as a whole
