About

The Master of Information Management is designed to produce an accredited entry-level professional qualification preparing you for work as a manager in the library, information and knowledge industries.

A rapidly changing work environment requires information literate graduates who are critical, creative and skilled in the storage, organization, access, retrieval, digitisation, dissemination and preservation of information through analysis, synthesis and interpretation.

This involves focused training on designing solutions to information management problems and situations for a diverse range of organizations.Over the duration of the program you will experience a range of learning experiences including lectures, tutorials and workshops based on designing solutions to information problems.

The application of the theoretical based learning to the discipline based work situation is undertaken through project work, real world case studies, guest speakers, seminars and the compulsory Industry Experience component.The program is accredited by both The Library and Information Association (ALIA) and The Records and Information Management Professionals Australasia (RIMPA).

As a graduate you will be able to operate globally as this qualification has international recognition.

You will also be qualified to undertake management level positions in the library, records, archives and information management sectors.

These include librarian positions in public, tertiary special, government and school libraries, and management positions in records, archive, document and knowledge management areas.

Applicants who have successfully completed any undergraduate degree (or equivalent) and are admitted into the program will receive advanced standing equivalent to four courses.

Entry requirements

Academic Entrance requirements

Australian bachelor degree or equivalent in any discipline;

or

Successful completion of the RMIT Graduate Certificate in Information Management;

The Graduate Certificate in Information Management consists of the first four discipline course of the Master program and acts as a pathway for the students who do not meet either of the first two admissions criteria. On completion of the Graduate Certificate in Information Management, you will transition to the master program and complete the remaining courses, so that your total duration of study is 1.5 yr (full time).

or

Australian Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters degree or equivalent in the same discipline.

Work Experience

Required: Minimum 3 years Full Time Equivalent (FTE) management experience

Learning outcomes

The practice of information and knowledge management requires practitioners to effectively identify, select, acquire, organize, manage, disseminate and add value to information and knowledge through analysis, summary and interpretation within a range of organisational environments. An understanding of cultural, social and ethical values frameworks informs the practice of information and knowledge management and is a defining capability in a sustainable global knowledge economy. Being information literate and able to use a knowledge management process approach to work is at the heart of the profession. A capable information and knowledge manager is one who is able to work effectively in a variety of information and knowledge environments and successfully integrate high level communication capability with sound technical abilities and proficiency in a range of skills to produce effective solutions to information and knowledge management problems. They will equip others to better manage their own information and knowledge resources. They will equip their organisation to position itself strategically through the effective capture and dissemination of knowledge. A capable information and knowledge manager is one who is able to reflect on practice, judge the effectiveness of systems and behaviours, and adapt to changing information and knowledge needs and to changing technological environments.
