About
The program has been designed for you to develop and enhance professional teaching skills through sound knowledge of theory, contemporary practice and issues in Secondary Education.
This program will also enable you to teach in national and international contexts, subject to local registration requirements.
You may also be able to work in non-traditional educational settings, private enterprise, government agencies and community service organisations.You will critically engage with relevant professional and theoretical knowledge and skills in teaching, learning and education.
While building knowledge and skills you will learn to investigate emerging theoretical trends as they apply to your teaching practice, including the latest technologies used in the field.
This suite of skills and experiences will underpin and be informed by your research and critical assessment of complex education directions and issues.You will undertake a series of work integrated learning experiences in schools and other educational settings throughout the program.
During these experiences you will progressively demonstrate achievement of each descriptor of the AITSL Standards for Graduating Teachers.
You will also undertake a capstone teaching performance assessment in the final year that comprises your final teaching placement and an action research project.
During your final teaching placement you will demonstrate effective classroom teaching practice including;
data interpretation, planning, teaching, assessing and reflecting.
You will conduct the action research project and write a report on the impact the development of your practice has on student learning.Successful completion of your final teaching performance assessment and a record of successful performance against all AITSL Graduate Teacher Standards are requirements for graduation.
On completion of the program you will be a professional practitioner with specialized knowledge of the education discipline.
You will be eligible to apply for teacher registration and teach in schools.
You will gain skills in global contexts for research and life-long learning to enable you to confidently contribute to the education sector.
You will use innovative applications of communication technology to support your teaching practice.
Through critical reflection you will work ethically and collaboratively with colleagues and external professional and community representatives.

Entry requirements
Successful completion of an Australian Bachelor degree, or equivalent, in a discipline relevant to a teaching specialization (refer to VIT Specialist Area Guidelines).

English language requirements
A minimum IELTS (academic module) overall band of 7.5, with individual band scores of 7.0 for reading, 7.0 for writing, 8.0 for listening and 8.0 for speaking.

Literacy and numeracy test
In order to register with VIT, students are required to pass a literacy and numeracy test (LANTITE) prior to graduating from their program. This test is mandated by the Federal Government and is administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Students are allowed a maximum of three attempts and must be successfully completed by the end of the first year of the program. For more information please see https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/
CASPer Test
All applicants must sit the CASPer test which satisfies the AITSL requirement for a non-academic test of aptitude for teaching. The CASPer test is used by many of the initial teacher training courses in Victoria. It is an online test designed to assess an applicant's personal and professional judgement and attributes. Other Requirements
Victorian Institute of Teaching language requirements
To register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) http://www.vit.vic.edu.au, all applicants who did not complete their initial tertiary qualification in English at an approved institution in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States of America need an academic IELTS of 7.5 with no individual band score less than 7.0 with a score of 8.0 in speaking and listening.
Working with children check
Please note that to undertake Professional Experience courses in the program, you must provide a satisfactory working with children check. If you are not able to provide this, you will be unable to complete the program.
Learning outcomes
The program has been designed to prepare you to work with young people in schools and other educational settings. The program learning outcomes have been aligned with recognized Australian standards for preparing pre- service teachers to obtain national professional registration.
As a graduate of this program you will be able to:

- Consolidate and synthesise expert content and pedagogical knowledge and judgement to develop highly effective and innovative teaching skills in an area of specialisation.

- Communicate and engage professionally and ethically with students, colleagues, parents, carers and education stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Show commitment to ongoing professional learning, particularly in relation to meeting the Australian Graduate Standards for Teachers.
