The Master of International Urban and Environment Management program (MC222) program will equip you with specialised knowledge and skills required for professional practice in urban and environmental management in a broad range of international contexts.
The courses offered thorugh program provide students with advanced knowledge and abilities to prepare and apply locally inspired solutions to a range of environmental and social challenges associated with urban development in cities and regions in rapidly urbanising nations.The course content and delivery of the program focuses on:The socio-economic and environmental challenges of rapid urban growth and sprawl.
The metabolism of cities, including flows of food, water and energy.
The challenges of global climate change and dependency on fossil fuel.
The application of urban and environmental knowledge and management in specific local contexts.
The Asia-Pacific region, including specialisation in particular locations.Graduates of this program are life-long learners and reflective practitioners, who through completing the program have gained skill sets that are transferable and able to be practiced in a global context.
These skills relate to research, environmental management, professional communication and problem solving.
Graduates work in Australia and internationally in policy development, planning and program management roles, and engage in professionally relevant practical projects with national and local governments, international development agencies, commercial consultancies and non-government organisations.
Past graduates have worked for organisations such as the Asian Development Bank, UN Habitat, Engineers Without Borders, local or national governments, and many private consultancies.This program promotes an analytical and critical approach to problem solving that allows students to develop appropriate technological and community-based responses to issues such as infrastructure development, informal settlements, environmental degradation and the rural-urban interface.
The program may be taken on campus or via the internet;
all core courses, and some electives, are offered fully online.As part of the program, you will be able to participate in study tours, international intensive courses, and/or exchanges with a range of partner institutions.
In your final year, you will undertake an individually negotiated professional research project as a capstone experience in ARCH1405 International Urban and Environmental Management Project.
This project will enable you to synthesise and integrate your knowledge, connect theory and practice, and demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.

Program Entry Requirements
An Australian undergraduate degree or its equivalent with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Applicants with significant work experience may also be considered. Applicants applying for entry on the basis of work experience must include with their application a CV and direct applicant statement detailing their experience.

Learning outcomes
As a graduate of this program you will be able to:
- Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on recent trends and scholarly analysis of the effects and consequences of urbanisation internationally, including the interplay of ecological, economic, political, social and cultural factors.
- Develop and use appropriate research tools, methods and strategies to generate knowledge, manage urban environments, and inform decision-making in diverse social, cultural and geographic contexts.
- Apply the specialist knowledge and technical skills required to implement locally inspired solutions to a range of environmental and other consequences of urbanisation.
- Clearly communicate complex and technical research findings and environmental management decisions to diverse audiences.
- Continually extend and challenge your knowledge and professional practice in urban and environmental management.
- Provide professional leadership by demonstrating environmental stewardship, cultural and social sensitivity, and ethical and reflective practice.
