This is an accelerated post-professional program designed to develop skills and practices required for leadership roles in design-oriented organisations.

These include businesses traditionally identified with design, as well as a growing field of public and private organisations that use design to achieve their strategic goals.Delivered online through RMIT’s Learning Management System — Canvas — the Master of Design Futures will help you become a more valuable and strategic design leader in the following ways:By extending your practice into strategic applications of traditional design skills By developing your capability to identify & articulate the contribution design makes to organisations By framing this new practice in the context of how we design our (social, cultural and economic) futures By introducing you to a global network of design professionals, design-oriented organisations, and different kinds of design problem.You will be able to interpret issues, confidently lead others and provide informed insights into future directions of the industry.

You will have the expertise and real world experience that will enable you to lead industry in this rapidly evolving domain.

You will be experienced in team-based activities and be able to research new developments and apply expert judgment to problems and opportunities as they arise in practice.Through a capstone experience based on an individually negotiated research project you will learn to synthesise and integrate your knowledge, connect theory and practice as well as demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.You will gain skills in global contexts for research and life-long learning to enable you to confidently contribute to an industry that is always evolving.

You will gain insight into your own creativity, and develop efficient work practices to allow you to plan, produce and deliver your own design projects.

On completion of the Master of Design Futures you will have completed the pre-requisites for further education at doctoral level.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) and five years of significant professional experience that demonstrates knowledge of human-centred design and any experience or skills that would be valuable to this practice; or at least eight years' of significant professional experience that demonstrates knowledge of human-centred design and any skills that would be valuable to this practice.

Experience or skills may include leadership, innovation, creative practice, community engagement, change management, forward thinking, social innovation, strategic and service planning and implementation.

English language requirements

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

Learning outcomes

As a graduate of this program you will be able to:

  • Critically discuss how communication, media and design contribute to experience centered strategy and leadership.
  • Apply advanced design skills to engage stakeholders, frame ill-defined problems, and create innovative solutions.
  • Determine and apply the specialist knowledge and technical skills required to creatively solve problems, demonstrating expert judgment and ethical responsibility relating to your professional practice and discipline.
  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on complex theories and recent developments, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice in your field.
  • Professionally communicate propositions, processes and outcomes to address specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Provide leadership within your discipline as well as collaborate with others.
  • Use appropriate research methods to design and execute substantial projects, evaluate the outcomes and theorise about the contribution of your learning to the profession and knowledge area.
  • Master a body of knowledge and specific technical skills to progress your professional career within the contemporary media and communication arena.
