About
The Master of Photography is a postgraduate professional practice degree specialising in photography.
We recognise the broad definition of photography as a lens-based, technologically determined medium, open to a variety of applications and creative expressions.
In this program you will explore photography through a combination of practice and theory, offering a rigorous and dynamic environment through which to realise your creative ambitions.Through studio based learning and independent research, you will develop skills to enable a thorough and complex investigation of contemporary photography.
You will have access to a creative environment facilitated by hands-on practical experience, one-on-one academic guidance, and the support of a community of peers.
You will be required to attend on-campus classes throughout the delivery of the program so that you can produce high quality photographic works, with access to photographic studios, editing and printing facilities.
On-campus classes will also provide opportunities for you to critique your own work and the work of others in a group setting with your lecturers and fellow students.The program is designed to meet the needs of candidates from diverse backgrounds and age groups, including professional photographers, artists, creative industry professionals, students graduating directly from undergraduate study and photographers returning to postgraduate study to advance their conceptual and creative skills and enliven their practice.
You will engage with your peers to develop critical networks that encourage and provide insight and support for each other’s photographic practice.The capstone experience of this program is a self-initiated, major photographic project appropriately presented for critical review and assessment, through a publically presented exhibition or outcome.Successful completion of the program may provide a pathway to higher degree research and see you prepared to work nationally and internationally in the various fields that define contemporary photography.

Entry requirements
You must have:
- Successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in a relevant creative discipline, or
- At least 5 years of professional experience in Photography.
To have your professional experience considered you must include in your application:
- a CV
- a statement that details your experience

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. See the RMIT University English entry requirements webpage for equivalents to this requirement.
Selection Task You must:
- complete and submit a selection kit
- attend a folio presentation
Learning outcomes
The Master of Photography will prepare you for work or further research in the diverse global photographic industry. As a graduate of the Master of Photography, you will have advanced and specialised knowledge and skills in photographic communication and practice. You will be able to independently create photographic works for professional presentation and communicate your ideas effectively in a range of professional contexts. You will have developed your own critical position toward the broad discipline of photography through independent, practice-led research so that you can make contributions to the broader fields of photography, art and culture.
