About

The MC275 Master of Interior Design program provides an industry partnered, project-based learning experience that critically examines the social, cultural, technological and environmental issues and challenges associated with the production of contemporary interior environments including public, commercial, civic, institutional and community spaces with a focus on the Asia / Australasian region.This program has been designed to give you specialised knowledge of interior design so that you are able to undertake professional work and/or pursue a pathway into research and further learning.

It provides graduates of Interior design and complimentary design fields with an opportunity position themselves in relation to current interior design practice through collaboration with clients, industry and peers.

This program is primarily delivered in face-to-face mode and you will be required to attend classes on campus.

Some courses in the program may be offered fully online.You will learn how to be an effective contributor in a team environment through the process of actual designing - developing a collective design response to a range of design briefs developed through industry and client engagement.

You will engage with client partners (encompassing commercial, institutional, civic and social organisations) and industry practice partners (interior design and associated design practices) together with the student cohort on actual, contemporary projects and challenges.

With an emphasis on ideas and a practice led approach to research and discovery, the knowledge and skills you will develop will enable you to work in a range of practices and to engage design as an agent of social and cultural change.The program combines the development of critical research investigation skills through design practice with a focused attention on industry relevant contemporary approaches to collaboration and engagement.

Graduates of this program will be highly effective team contributors with strong communication and technical skills.A capstone experience is provided in which you will integrate and synthesise your knowledge, integrate theory and practice and demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.

With a strong focus on issues and affecting the broader Australasian region, the program also provides opportunities for you to undertake global intensives to locations within Asia.Graduates may be employed in commercial design and architectural practices where you may be involved in concept development, feasibility studies, competition bids, construction documentation, client presentations, and site management.

Commissions could include restaurants, hotels, retail spaces, corporate offices and public buildings.

You may also find employment in advisory roles and strategic positions that utilise your design skills, thinking and knowledge in broader fields of work including business, cultural events and education.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or overseas equivalent) in a related discipline. Related disciplines include Interior Design, Spatial Design, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Spatial Arts, Theatre Design, Exhibition Design, Service Design, Industrial Design, Experience Design.

If you have successfully completed the Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) program at RMIT with a GPA of 2.5 or above, you will be exempted from submitting the selection task (folio of design work) and will be guaranteed entry into year 2 of the program. Students with a GPA lower than 2.5 may still apply for entry and will be assessed on merit based on their folio of design work.

English Language Requirements

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

Selection Task

The folio should demonstrate abilities in design or creative practice. It should be well laid out and must contain pieces of work from the undergraduate studies and, if available, professional projects. The folio should be a package of images, drawings, sketches, paintings, models, photographs, computer work, etc. of creative/design projects; and should include titles and descriptions outlining concepts/ideas that lead to the final design piece. Submission instructions: Upload the folio as a single PDF (maximum 30 pages). Maximum file size 10MB OR Provide a URL to a single PDF if hosted online (provide the username and password if applicable)

Learning outcomes

As a graduate of this program you will be able to:

  • Establish modes of practice that initiate and execute substantial interior design projects situated in contemporary interior design.
  • Respond to the challenges of contemporary interior design using an applied critical knowledge of relevant environmental, cultural, political, economic and ethical issues in a global context.
  • Engage in a team focused design practice approach and effectively liaise with key stakeholders, managing the expectations of partners and collaborators across sectors.
  • Generate innovative outcomes for interior design projects within a range of settings and engage stakeholders through a mastery of practice which synthesizes creative, critical, analytical, reflective and theoretical skills.
  • Use high level research principles and methods that enable a critical and strategic approach to interior design practice that demonstrate autonomy and accountability within a professional context.
  • Effectively and fluently disseminate design research to specialist and non-specialist audiences through a mastery of communication skills in a range of forms and media which shows a sophisticated understanding of the technical and theoretical frameworks of interior design.
