The Bachelor of Education provides the opportunity to gain an understanding of teaching and learning in an Australian context.
This degree does not qualify students to become a teacher.
Students will gain broad knowledge of primary school and early childhood areas and the capacity to critically review theory and practice.
Structure
The Bachelor of Education offers a three-year degree that does not qualify students to become a teacher but rather provides the opportunity to gain an understanding of education as an academic discipline in Australian teaching and learning contexts. The degree is comprised of compulsory and elective units of study. In this regard, the flexibility of the degree allows students the opportunity to choose electives which match the variety of education environments and develop skills for the future education workforce. The course enables graduates to work within the field of education at a policy or governmental level but without an accredited teaching award.
To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Education, students must complete 300 credit points comprising of:
- 6 core units (75 credit points)
- 8 units in an Education major (100 credit points)
- 10 units of study (125 credit points) comprising of electives
Students must not complete more than 125 credit points (normally 10 units) at Introductory level. A unit of study can only be counted once, where units are shared between majors and/or minors, students must choose an approved alternative.
Swinburne Online offers a flexible degree structure allowing students to adjust their study commitment throughout the duration of their program. Students have the flexibility to study between one and four units per teaching period.
- Accelerated study: 12 units of study per academic year
- Full-time study: eight units of study per academic year
- Part-time study: four units of study per academic year
- Recommended study: six units of study per academic year

VCE prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 25 in English (other than EAL) or at least 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Applicants without a formal qualification but with significant and relevant work experience will be considered if they can demonstrate that they can undertake the course with a reasonable prospect of success.
All applicants must demonstrate suitable English language proficiency for successful completion of the course. The University may determine selection criteria and restrictions in respect of courses to apply in addition to these entry requirements. Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place. Working with Children Check and All enrolled students must maintain a current Working with Children Check (from the appropriate State Authority). Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Education will be able to:
- show broad and coherent knowledge of students aged 0-12 years and how they learn with capacity to show initiative and judgement when making decisions or solving problems
- show broad and coherent knowledge of Primary School and Early Childhood content areas within the Australian context, and capacity to critically review theory and practice
- demonstrate the capacity to show initiative and judgment to plan for, and implement, effective teaching and learning in diverse contexts with the capacity to solve problems with intellectual independence
- demonstrate the capacity to adapt knowledge and skills to create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments, and the ability to critically analyse information in diverse contexts
- show responsibility and accountability for own learning to identify, engage in and apply professional learning, individually and in collaboration with others
- demonstrate conceptual knowledge of the principles of diversity and difference and the implications to children’s rights and inclusive practice, with the ability to adapt such knowledge in diverse contexts.
