Concurrently undertaken with either the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business, the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) is a professional pilot course beyond the minimum specified by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Graduates are qualified to commence an aircraft type endorsement in either the charter or regular public transport airline sectors, or alternatively commence employment as a professional flight instructor.

Structure

Concurrently undertaken with either the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business, the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) is a professional pilot course beyond the minimum specified by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Graduates are qualified to commence an aircraft type endorsement in either the charter or regular public transport airline sectors, or alternatively commence employment as a professional flight instructor.

The Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) consists of a total of four units (50 credit points). Units normally carry 12.5 credit points. In each academic year, eight units normally constitute a full-time load of 100 credit points. The delivery of the course however is integrated with either the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business and course progression is dependent on prerequisite units in both the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) and the bachelor courses. Course progression can be accelerated (subject to meeting unit prerequisites) through the utilisation of both Summer and Winter Terms in addition to the semesters.

The course is designed to be completed part-time over a three year period when undertaken concurrently with either of the bachelor courses. Total student contact hours, including on ground briefings and flying practicums will vary in different semesters.

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting), students must complete four units (50 credit points) minimum, comprising:

  • 3 core Aviation Practical Studies units (37.5 credit points)
  • 1 elective Aviation Practical Studies unit minimum (at least 12.5 credit points), with the option of undertaking additional electives from this group

Additionally, units of study from the Optional Additional Aviation Practical Studies may be undertaken to address substandard competency standards at the completion of the allocated training hours.

Entry requirements

Enrolment into this program is processed by a Course Advisor in the Faculty of Science Engineering and Technology.

Please do not submit a 'Direct Entry' Application. Only students admitted into the Bachelor of Aviation OR the Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business are eligible to apply.

Applicants must have already met the admissions requirements and have been admitted into either:

  • Bachelor of Aviation
  • Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business

It should be noted that the aviation regulator (ie CASA) may require a different English language requirement for licence issue.

Enrolment in the Graduate Certificate program, and the continuation of such enrolment, is dependent on a continuing an active enrolment in the Bachelor degree courses.

Special entry does not apply for this program.

Applicants will be required to meet the requirements of a Class 1 medical examination as regulated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for holders of a Commercial Pilot Licence (Aeroplane).

Learning outcomes

On completion of the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business, and upon additional completion of the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) graduates will be expected to be able to:

  • demonstrate both broad and specialised technical knowledge and skills within the field of professional pilot practice
  • critically apply theoretical and practical skills as a professional pilot and to be able to analyse, evaluate and review to provide solutions to non ambiguous, ambiguous and novel complex flight scenarios
  • apply knowledge and skills beyond the minimum specified in the Civil Aviation Safety Authority Part 61 Manual of Standards to achieve the licencing qualification of Commercial Pilot (Aeroplane)
  • apply knowledge and skills beyond the minimum as specified by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to achieve the rating qualification of Instrument Rating Command Multi Engine Aeroplane
  • apply knowledge and skills beyond the minimum as specified by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to achieve either the rating qualification of Flight Instructor or achieve successful completion of a Multi Crew Cooperation Course
  • initiate high level judgements within the professional pilot framework
  • successfully communicate complex knowledge, skills and ideas with a variety of stakeholder audiences in a range of practical and technical and learning contexts
  • demonstrate professional standards at all times that include responsibility and accountability with a pro-active professional pilot work ethic and recognise the need to engage in ongoing professional development.

This program, undertaken in conjunction with the Bachelor program, will aim to produce graduates who:

  • are capable in their chosen professional, vocational or study areas
  • are entrepreneurial in contributing to innovation and development within their business, workplace or community
  • operate effectively and ethically in work and community situations
  • are adaptable and manage change
  • are aware of local and international environments in which they will be contributing (eg socio-cultural, economic, natural).
