The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Supervision course provides high quality multidisciplinary training in clinical supervision for professionals working in the mental health area.

Structure

The course provides specialised skills in supervision across a range of professional disciplines and is designed to meet the needs of suitably qualified professionals (e.g. qualified counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and other mental health professionals) who are currently in supervisory capacity or intend to become supervisors.

Prospective applicants should also consider the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Supervision.

International students in Australia who hold student visas are required to study full-time and on campus. Courses that are taught entirely online are only available to international students studying outside Australia or those in Australia who are not on a student visa. Online courses are not available to international students in Australia who hold a student visa.

The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Supervision consists of a total of four units (50 credit points) nested within the Graduate Diploma. Over one semester, four units normally constitute a full-time load of 50 credit points and two units normally constitute a part-time load of 25 credit points.

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Supervision, students must complete 50 credit points comprising:

  • Foundation units (25 credit points)
  • Specialist unit (12.5 credit points)
  • Practical unit - introductory (12.5 credit points)

Units of study

For the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Supervision, students are required to complete the following four units totalling 50 credit points:

PSC60015 Introduction to Clinical Supervision PSC60016 Ethical and Legal Issues in Supervision PSC60017 CBT Models in Supervision PSC60018 Peer and Group Practical Supervision and Assessment

Entry requirements

Please note this program is only available to offshore Singaporean nationals completing the program via Executive Training Counselling Academy.

The program is taught in English. If necessary, applicants will need to provide evidence of advanced proficiency in written and spoken English.

Applicants must also satisfy the following requirements:

  • Completion of an approved undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a related discipline from a recognised university or equivalent institution; and
  • Completion of a government recognised program in counselling training at a satisfactory standard or completion of a program in a related discipline at professional certificate level, which in the opinion of the Selection Committee, is suitable preparation for entry into the program

Selection is based on an interview and the applicant’s suitability for the course as determined by personal suitability as well as academic and work experience. Each applicant will be expected to provide: evidence of a high standard of performance in previous academic studies, two referee reports, evidence of appropriate supervised counselling experience and a written statement of their reasons for wishing to undertake the program.

English language requirements

Satisfactory completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0
  • Swinburne’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP 5 Advanced level) with overall 70%, all skills 65%
  • Or equivalent measures available at English language requirements.

Learning outcomes

The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Supervision course aims to provide high quality multidisciplinary training in clinical supervision for professionals working in the mental health area. The course also aims to address a growing gap between demand and availability of comprehensive training in the area of clinical supervision. The course will provide specialised skills in supervision across a range of professional disciplines and is designed to meet the needs of suitably qualified professionals (e.g. qualified counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and other mental health professionals) who are currently in supervisory capacity or intend to become supervisors.

At the completion of the Graduate Certificate, students are expected to be able to:

  • apply cognitive skills to review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge and identify and provide solutions to complex problems within the supervisory context, and to think critically to generate and evaluate complex ideas
  • apply specialised and advanced technical and creative skills in the professional practice of supervision
  • use communication skills to demonstrate an advanced and broad understanding of theoretical concepts in supervision, to transfer complex knowledge and ideas to a variety of audiences
  • demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills to make high level, independent judgements in a range of technical or management functions in varied specialised clinical contexts
  • initiate, plan, implement and evaluate supervision practice within varied specialised technical and/or creative contexts
  • demonstrate responsibility and accountability for personal outputs and all aspects of the supervisory work or function of others (e.g., supervisees).
