The Internal Medicine program is the first of its kind in Australia.

It is a collaboration between The University of Melbourne and The University of Sydney which provides a unique depth of teaching and clinical experience.This course is offered through our interactive online learning environment, giving you the flexibility to tailor your study schedule around your lifestyle.All stream specific units are online.

You may find however;

one capstone unit does have a face-to-face component.

While the program is focused on doctors undertaking training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, it offers a strong background in internal medicine to trainees and established clinicians in emergency medicine, intensive care medicine and general practice who want to develop their knowledge and skills in adult internal medicine.Flexible case-based learning will enable you to maximise the learning opportunities in your clinical exposure.

You will advance your clinical knowledge and practice in areas of interest, as well as develop expertise in other areas important to career advancement.

The basic stream specific units are aimed at the level of knowledge expected for the FRACP Basic Training examination, while the advanced units offer greater depth in these areas of study.

A great benefit of the program will be the opportunity to interact with other doctors who are at a similar stage in their career, share knowledge and skills in a supportive environment, and make key contacts with Australia's leading physicians.

The largely online nature of the course means that you can continue your educational program during rotation to suburban, rural and regional hospitals.This course is for medical graduates who are working in an Australian or New Zealand jurisdiction and undertaking training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

It will also be useful for trainees and established clinicians working in emergency medicine, intensive care medicine or adult general practice.

Entry requirements

Admission criteria

Admission to the Graduate Diploma in Medicine (Internal Medicine) requires a medical degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification and the following:

  • current medical registration in an Australian or New Zealand jurisdiction
  • current or prior employment as a medical practitioner in a clinical setting in an Australian or New Zealand jurisdiction.
