Equally, diabetes is estimated to affect 1.7 million Australians, with one person developing diabetes every five minutes.Most health professionals encounter people with obesity and diabetes in their clinical practice and management options are becoming more complex.This professional certificate will upskill doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in the evidence-based, practical management of obesity and diabetes.

The management of overweight, obesity, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes is addressed, with a focus on patient-centred management, prevention strategies, lifestyle interventions, bariatric surgery, medication options and regimens, new technology and sustainability of outcomes.

Different health care delivery methods and team based approaches to care are discussed.This professional certificate is designed for medical practitioners (particularly GPs, junior medical officers, and general physicians in rural and regional areas who are involved in diabetes care), nurses and allied health professionals with an interest in diabetes care (including pharmacists, dentists, dietitians, and exercise physiologists).Units of study:

Admission criteria

Admission to the Sydney Professional Certificate in Metabolic Health requires a:

• medical degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent; or
• bachelor or postgraduate degree in nursing or allied health plus a minimum 12 months relevant experience.
