About
The Master of English Studies is designed for research students from Australia and overseas, secondary school teachers and those interested in studying English literature at an advanced level.Through the course you will bring together contemporary critical theory with literary narratives and investigate how and why literature still enjoys particular resonance in the 21st century.
You will consider the ways in which the study of literature works in a specifically Australian cultural context.This course focuses on three core approaches:Our reputation is established in literary studies across a wide historical and geographical range.We offer an extensive choice our scholarly experts teach in a broad spectrum of fields:
medieval;
early modern;
18th and 19th century;
modern and contemporary;
American and Australian literatures;
and various aspects of cultural theory.
You also have the option of taking creative writing units of study in contemporary poetry, fiction and screenwriting.Commonwealth Supported PlacesCommonwealth Supported Places (CSP) are available for postgraduate study for eligible domestic students.
This means that your course fees are subsidised by the Australian Government and you pay a student contribution amount (SCA).
CSPs are limited in number and are allocated based on academic merit.
Entry requirements
Admission requirement
Entry in the 1 or 1.5 year degree program is determined by the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) criteria below.
Admission to candidature for the Master of English Studies (1.5 years full-time) requires:
- a bachelor's degree with a major in English Literature and a minimum credit (65%) average calculated over the whole degree, from the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification.
Admission to candidature for the Master of English Studies (1 year full-time) requires:
- completion of the requirements for the embedded Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in English Studies with a minimum credit (65%) average, or an equivalent qualification; or
- an Honours degree in a relevant discipline.
If you do not meet the requirements listed above for direct entry to the Master’s degree, you may be able to enter via a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in the same subject area and upgrade to the Master’s after successful completion of the shorter course.
