The Master of Health Policy provides students with a comprehensive and practical understanding of health systems and the policy-making process.

It offers a critical perspective on how health systems operate, how policies across a range of sectors, both public and private, influence health and how to create health policy change.

Graduates will have a comprehensive and practical understanding of policymaking, including systems thinking;

economic evaluation;

health financing and budgets;

power, politics and agenda setting;

and the critical use of evidence.What is the different between the Master of Health Policy and the Master of Public Health?

The Master of Health Policy is an accelerated program for people that have existing work experience and can be completed in one year full time.

It equips you to work across all sectors und understand and shape both public health systems as well as the healthcare system - including primary, tertiary and oral healthcare.

By completing the Master of Health Policy you will learn how to use policy instruments to make system level changes that improve efficiency and bring change forward by understanding the political, institutional and structural aspects of decision making in health.Do I have to sit exams?

The assessments in this degree are a mix of written assignments, short answer assignments, take-home quizzes and group problem-solving.

We make sure your assignments are directly relevant to current health policy issues – so you will practice writing convincing cases for policy change throughout your degree.

Entry requirements

Admission criteria

Admission to the Master of Health Policy degree requires:

  • a bachelor's degree with first or second class honours from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification and a minimum of 1 year of work experience in a health or policy related field; or
  • completion of the requirements of the embedded graduate certificate; or
  • completion of the requirements of the embedded graduate diploma, or equivalent qualification.

In exceptional circumstances the dean may admit applicants without this qualification who, in the opinion of the school, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.
