About

The Faculty of Medicine and Health has re-developed the Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy.

From 2021, the Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy will be delivered under one new central name and course code.

Both degrees are now available for application for 2021 commencement.

The new courses will aim to offer greater research flexibility and interdisciplinary learning across all faculty areas of study.

The Master of Philosophy (Dentistry) course is aimed at those who intend to pursue academic careers in oral health or a related field and can be used as a foundation to commencing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).At the University of Sydney School of Dentistry, our aim is to put the mouth back into health by progressing a deeper understanding of the links between oral and systemic health.Normally completed over two years full-time, or four years part-time, the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a research-based degree in which students undertake supervised research in a range of dental specialisations or disciplines. This course offers students the chance to work with a supervisor who is actively contributing to the development of new knowledge and understanding in the field of dentistry.MPhil students are required to successfully complete a unit of study on research methods, although the thesis is the major examinable assessment requirement for the degree.

The word limit for a thesis submitted to the Sydney Dental School is 80,000 words.MPhil students are based primarily at the Westmead Centre for Oral Health and Sydney Dental School and benefit from their peers, teachers and the wider health community that is accessible through the University.Studying at Sydney Dental School provides a unique opportunity for collaborative research and interaction with other health disciplines.

Our research is shaped by the big picture.

We look at real-world problems from all angles, combining the expertise and talents of scholars from many disciplines.
