This postgraduate qualification is for non-medical professionals who are currently working in an appropriate anatomical pathology laboratory and are looking for advanced training in the dissection, sampling and preparation of tissues for histopathological examination and diagnosis.

Practical experience in your workplace setting as part of the required Surgical Laboratory Workbook course will be a pivotal part of your learning.

This course is only available to study part-time, over a minimum of 12 months.

Entry requirements

  • hold a degree or diploma in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent
  • have majored in or completed advanced studies in laboratory histopathology

Learning outcomes

You will gain advanced training in:

  • the dissection, sampling and preparation of tissues for histopathological examination and diagnosis
  • specimen recording
  • data storage and retrieval
  • standard operating procedures
  • Occupation Health Safety and Welfare (OHS&W)
  • equipment used
  • macro and microphotography.

Practical experience in your clinical setting, as part of the required Surgical Laboratory Workbook course, will be a pivotal part of your learning.

For each course you study, you will need to allocate time for various classes such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Plus you will need additional hours to study in your own time to complete assignments, readings and projects and contribute to online discussion forums. So as a general rule, if you are studying full-time you would need to allocate 12 – 26 hours of study when at university and 14 – 28 hours of independent study per week.
