About

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) provides a professional course of pre-service education for aspiring secondary school teachers (Years 7-12).

The Master of Teaching program aims to combine the practical and theoretical elements of teaching by immersing students in both classroom and university studies from the commencement of the program.

Early immersion into teaching and a focus on research to inform teaching practice are central to the program.

The course provides students with a minimum of 60 days professional experience.

New students will be required to complete the new online Working With Children Check (WWCC) at www.newcheck.kids.nsw.gov.au.

Clearance must be obtained prior to attending professional experience.

Structure

To qualify for the award of this degree, a candidate must satisfactorily complete 96 credit points as specified in the table below, including the Teaching and Performance Assessment (UOW TPA).

Students may only choose teaching methods approved at course enrolment. Some methods may not be offered if minimum enrolment numbers are not met.

To be eligible to undertake the final professional experience, a candidate must:

  1. have passed all core subjects;
  2. have successfully completed Literacy and Numeracy Test (LANTITE); and
  3. be enrolled in any annual and final semester core subjects.

Plus two 800 or 900 level elective subjects selected from the Master of Education. Alternate elective subjects may be considered by approval of Academic Program Director. Contact the Academic Program Director for further information regarding elective subjects. Students may choose to take electives prior to Spring session (2nd Year) to prevent interference with the EDMT910 internship.

Learning outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to:

CLO Description 1 Demonstrate advanced and integrated understanding of the demands related to working with linguistic, cultural, religious and socio-economic diversity of children, young people, families and communities in contemporary Australia; 2 Demonstrate advanced and integrated understanding of the complexities of classrooms and schools, developed through participation in professional dialogue with practitioners, peers and professional experience programs; 3 Demonstrate knowledge of, and the ability to keep abreast of latest developments in educational theory, policy and practice, and evaluating and applying these developments in connection with their own professional teaching practice; 4 Demonstrate skills and knowledge to critically evaluate, interpret, design and conduct research to inform educational practice; 5 Work as adaptable, responsible, reflective, autonomous teachers who use their skills and knowledge of teaching, learning and learners to make informed judgments that improve their classroom practice and student learning; 6 Analyse, interpret and effectively communicate the complexity of factors influencing learning to students, parents, and colleagues; 7 Demonstrate understanding of the compliance requirements related to mandated curricula, professional accreditation and the implementation of legislated policy.
