Exercise and Sport Sciences (Honours)

University of Queensland

About

This program will ignite your interest in the complexities of maintaining an active, healthy human body and allow you to make a vital contribution to wellbeing, rehabilitation and performance.

This program focuses on understanding how to enhance human performance, how the body responds to exercise and physical activity, and how to conduct research which could help build healthier communities and stronger athletes.

As a graduate you will be eligible for professional membership and accreditation with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) as an Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES).

Students who complete practicum under approved supervision will meet all requirements for accreditation as a Level 1 Sport Scientist (ASpS)*.

You will study at one of the best human movement and nutrition sciences schools in Australia, known around the world for its research and expert staff.

You will also have access to the latest industry equipment in the School's own specialist biomechanics, motor control, exercise physiology and strength conditioning laboratories and health clinics, and UQ's Olympic-standard recreational and sporting facilities.

*Graduates will also be required to address the Level 1 ASpS Professional Standards (Standards 1 to 6) to fulfil accreditation requirements.

Structure

During this program you will examine all elements of exercise and sport sciences including how the body reacts to acute and chronic physical activity, and the complexities of maintaining an active and healthy body. In addition to foundation courses in anatomy, physiology and biology, you will complete advanced courses in areas including biomechanics, exercise physiology, health promotion, and motor control. You learn how to deliver exercise and physical activity programs and conduct exercise testing and movement analysis for apparently health people ranging from recreationally active individuals, through to elite athletes. You may tailor the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences (Honours) towards a specialisation of your choice through your decisions on elective courses and practicum placements - specialised professional areas may include elite athlete development, sports conditioning and performance, clinical measurements or corporate and community health and fitness. In your final year you will undertake a research project under the guidance of an experienced researcher.
