Dietetics Studies

University of Queensland

About

This program will prepare you for eligibility as an Accredited Practising Dietitian with the Dietitians Association of Australia.

There is a growing demand for qualified dietitians in both Australia and overseas due to an increasing awareness of the importance of food and nutrition in health and disease prevention.

You also develop the skills and knowledge to help people understand food and health relationships, enabling them to make better food choices to get the most out of their lifestyles.

Structure

This program is designed for students with a background in nutrition science, public health nutrition, biochemistry, physiology and statistics. During your studies you will develop practical skills and knowledge in how to apply the art and science of human nutrition in the prevention and treatment of medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity and infectious diseases. Choose from a diverse range of courses and explore advanced topics and practices in dietetics and nutrition, such as mental health, rural health, paediatrics and private practice. If research is your passion, you can pursue this in your final semester and complete an innovative project alongside leading international researchers. You will also have the potential to contribute to the published scientific literature.

During placements, you will have the opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop your clinical skills in real life settings. On campus you will gain practical, hands-on experience in UQ's modern dietetics demonstration space. Here you will learn about novel and functional foods, meals and recipes, how to cook nutritionally modified meals and deliver community cooking demonstrations. Clinical placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area where you will be required to fund your travel, accommodation and daily expenses. This program has pre-placement requirements which must be met prior to commencement of the program or a placement course. Further details can be found on the Placement Ready website.
