Back to top Program aims This program involves the study of eight units of course work at the undergraduate level to provide enhanced understanding of basic issues and principles in the human services environment and, through elective studies, the acquisition of associated skills and conceptual frameworks.
In vocational terms it would provide a foundation program for people wishing to work in community organisations or community development with marginalised groups in Australian society.
Completion of this program does not provide students with a professional qualification in community development, human services, social work or psychology.
Entry requirements
Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:
- Have achieved a minimum Overall Position (OP) 17, tertiary entrance rank 65 or equivalent qualification.^
- English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 2.
Applicants are advised to also note the following:
- Assumed knowledge expectations: English.
All students are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements.
If students do not meet the English language requirements they may apply to study a University-approved English language program. On successful completion of the English language program, students may be admitted to an award program.
These are determined by the University for specific programs each Semester. The 2019 OP and tertiary entrance ranks are based on agreed QTAC schedules which assess formal study at Year 12 or equivalent level, tertiary, preparatory, professional or vocational qualifications or work experience, as detailed in the QTAC Assessment of Qualifications Manual and QTAC Assessor Guidelines. Special admissions may help you get into the program of your choice by increasing your Selection Rank. The additional points don't apply to all applicants or all programs. Program objectives
On completion of this program students should be able to:
- apply knowledge and skills to effectively communicate in the human services sector and develop relationships and respond to the needs of diverse groups
- examine fundamental challenges experienced by marginalised social groups including issues related to mental health
- examine the principles and issues of human services and understand the legal, ethical and social responsibilities that are integral to work in community and development sector organisations
- work collaboratively with peers and clients with sensitivity to diverse needs and a commitment to equity and social justice
- apply professional skills needed to plan, case manage, implement and evaluate a range of strategies appropriate to individuals and community welfare and development.
