However, when Government guidelines change, on-campus studies will be reintroduced.Whether you are looking to embark on a career at sea or take the next step into the maritime industry, our Bachelor of Applied Science (MarineEngineering) provides the gateway to working aboard vessels around the globe.The Australian Maritime College’s Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) degree will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to undertake operation and maintenance associated to shipboard marine engineering systems.
Our program is designed to integrate professional short courses and training at sea so that you will not only obtain a bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma but also a Certificate of Competency issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).Our program will prepare you for a career as a Marine Engineer with the practical skill and knowledge to work aboard commercial vessels.
You will learn about marine engineering systems, vessel structure and operations, cargo and passenger transport, vessel management, marine legislation, marine survey and shipboard safety.
We also grant access to an alternative degree exit option, with the inclusion of our nested Advanced Diploma, offering an unmatched opportunity to embark on a career as an Engineer Watchkeeper just after your first 2 years of study.Our programs are also fully compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention, as amended in 2010).Course Coordinator:

Phase 1 – Pre-sea education and training at the Newham Campus (Launceston)
Phase 2 – Shipboard Operational Experience / Work book units – Sea-time*
Phase 3 – Engineer Watchkeeper education and training at the Newnham Campus (Launceston)
Phase 4 – Shipboard Operational Experience / Work book units – Sea-time*
Phase 5 – Class 2 /Class 1 education and training at the Newnham Campus (Launceston)

*A cadetship or employment with a shipping company is required in order to complete the seatime phases of this course. Employment may be sought either before or after Year 1 (Pre Sea) studies. For information on how to secure a cadetship, please visit: www.amc.edu.au/tips-cadetship
Cadets need to complete 3 years of studies to obtain BAS (Mar Eng) degree qualification and to appear for the Engine Watch Keeper Certificate of Competency (This is the default pathway)
Optionally, Cadets who wish to exit at the end of Year 2 studies to appear for AMSA Orals for an Engine Watch Keeper Certificate of Competency, will have to complete additional 10 weeks of workshop time at a TAFE college in Australia. Domestic applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years)
Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. In 2019, the lowest ATAR to receive an offer into this course was 82.8. The lowest ATAR to receive an offer may change from year to year based on the number of applications we receive. For 2020, you will be guaranteed a place in this course if you have an ATAR of 60 or above and meet all the other prerequisites below.
Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your study plan and subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.
To be eligible for an offer, you must have satisfactory achievement in the following Tasmanian Senior Secondary subjects (or equivalent):

Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of marine engineering by:
- Applying a diverse array of scientific concepts to safely operate and maintain the main propulsion system in a commercial ship.
2. Critically analyse and solve marine engineering related problems by:
- Analysing, interpreting and evaluating a range of available data sources in standard- operational and emergency related scenarios on a commercial ship.
- Implementing regulatory appropriate responses which enable the continued safe operation of a commercial ship.
3. Practice effective leadership in marine engineering by:
- Establishing how various management theories can be applied in common marine engineering roles.
- Exhibiting communication, collaboration and decision making which enable safe operation of a commercial ship.
4. Demonstrate personal and professional stewardship through:
- Locating and adhering to regulatory frameworks relevant to marine engineering in the international shipping industry.
- Performing all tasks in an ethical manner where the safety of persons and protection of the natural environment are of the greatest importance.
