About
(Integrated program) This on-campus honours course is offered at Hobart on a full-time basis.
It is designed to be taken by students enrolled in the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) as an overload during Year 4 of the course.While all students in the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours graduate with an honours degree, applied honours does not serve as a pre-requisite to a Research Higher Degree program (e.g.
PhD).Students who wish to enrol in a PhD in the future should consider the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B).
In this program, they will design and conduct an individual project under the supervision of a team of experienced researchers.
They will submit a research thesis, which is required for entry into a Research Higher Degree program.The Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) enhances career opportunities and is the usual prerequisite for further study for a research higher degree (Master of Pharmacy or Doctor of Philosophy).
Research Higher Degrees are generally expected for positions in the pharmaceutical industry, academia or government regulatory agencies.Honours consists of a major research project, which is planned and commenced in third year and carried out in fourth year as an overload in the units CSA433 and CSA434 Pharmacy Honours.
It is a significant time commitment in addition to standard Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) units and will not be suitable for all students with the necessary entry prerequisites.
Students are expected to spend considerable time on their research projects outside Semesters 1 and 2 of the academic year.
Structure
The individual research project component of the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) is completed as an overload in Year 4 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) program. The schedules of the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) and the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) are identical from Years 1 to 3. In Year 4 Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) students enrol in CSA433 and CSA434 Pharmacy Honours in addition to the standard Year 4 units
Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) students will be selected at the beginning of third year from amongst Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) students achieving at least a credit average, which they will be required to maintain in the honours program. Students who meet the entry requirements and choose to undertake honours will be enrolled in Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) at the beginning of Year 4 and will undertake the additional honours units as an overload.
Honours students will develop their individual research projects during Year 3 of the program, and will then conduct their project during Year 4 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B).
Entry requirements
Students who are eligible for the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B) will be identified at the end of Year 2 of the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) based on their GPA. Students with at least a credit average will receive an invitation to enrol in the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours (54B).
