It was created for outstanding students, just like you.Marine environments cover the globe, and so we provide a globally connected education.
You can apply for the Overseas Exchange Program and spend a semester learning at one of our international partner institutions.
If you're accepted to the program, you'll be automatically supported by a $2,500 scholarship.You can also apply for a Summer Research Project where you will work with a supervisor on a research topic of your choice.
Again, upon being accept for a project you'll be supported by an automatic $3,000 scholarship.You can even graduate with a custom built, multidisciplinary second degree, the high achiever academic extension Bachelor of Philosophy at no extra cost, with just a few additional units.There is a $7,500 relocation scholarship available for domestic interstate students moving to Tasmania, and a $3,000 bursary for Tasmanian students to support the start of University studies.If you want to get the most out of your University experience, set yourself apart in your chosen field, and give yourself an edge for future employment, the Marine and Antarctic Science Catalyst Program is for you.
Structure
The Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science component of the Marine and Antarctic Science Catalyst Program normally takes three years to finish and requires the successful completion of 24 units. The five specialisations that are available are:
Marine and Antarctic Governance (Hobart)
Solving complex geopolitical environmental issues requires an understanding of the science at the core of issues and communicating this information to government in a compelling way to inform policy. Take a multidisciplinary approach to learning with topics available ranging from Marine Ecology to International Relations.
Marine Biology (Hobart)
The study of marine plants and animals is a field that can provide a lifetime of rich and rewarding experiences around the globe. Careers in this area include working as a marine biologist anywhere in the world.
Marine Resource Management (Launceston)
With a booming world population, the stress on an already strained environment and its natural resources is being felt particularly strongly in the Southern Oceans. This major gives you the qualifications to create a career in this globally significant field as you work towards meeting challenges now and in the future.
Physical Oceanography (Hobart)
The study of ocean currents, changing ocean temperatures and sea-level and the ocean’s role in the climate system can provide a lifetime of rich and rewarding experiences around the globe. This major gives you the skills and knowledge to work as an oceanographer anywhere in the world.
Sustainable Aquaculture (Launceston)
Sustainability is the key to the future of the aquaculture industry. Designed with industry needs in mind, gain knowledge and skills to create innovative processes that provide sustainable environmental, economic, and community benefits to, and from, the aquaculture industry.
Bachelor of Philosophy
The Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science and Summer Research Project all contribute to the requirements for the Bachelor of Philosophy. This means that by successfully completing the Marine and Antarctic Science Catalyst Program, you can be only a few units away from attaining a second degree for no additional cost.

Domestic applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years)
Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. This course is new in 2020. An indicative ATAR for this course is 90.00.
It is recommended that school leavers also include the Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science (P3L) in your preferences when applying.
For some specialisations, satisfactory performance in the following Tasmanian Senior Secondary subjects or equivalent is required:

If you have not met this prerequisite, you will need to complete a UTAS foundation unit before you start your course.
You can enquire online for information on interstate and international equivalents to the Tasmanian senior secondary subjects above. UTAS provides foundation units for students who haven’t completed the recommended prior studies for their specialisation.
All other domestic applicants
Please note this course is for school leavers only. Students from other educations backgrounds can apply for the Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science (P3L, exactly the same degree that is in this program.
If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors, including economic hardship, serious medical condition or disability.
We can only approve applications for special consideration where we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course. Special consideration is not available for international applicants.
