About

This teacher education preparation course provides students with a master's qualification to teach in NSW secondary schools.

Students who have both the required undergraduate degree and specialisation subjects can complete the course in two years.

The course offers major studies in English, Mathematics, Science, PDHPE (available to C10300 Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science pathway students until the 2021 intake only), HSIE, English/HSIE, English/EAL/D, Science/Mathematics, HSIE/Mathematics, Science/EAL/D, and Mathematics/EAL/D.The core component provides research-based studies of educational theory and practice as a basis for professional decision-making in the secondary school context;

the major component provides teaching methods;

and the professional experience component includes both campus-based and field-based experiences, and is available in each of the specialisation areas.This course is a NSW secondary school teaching preparation course and adheres to the subject content knowledge prerequisites as stipulated by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).

It is suitable for students about to graduate with a bachelor's degree and for mature-aged graduates who are changing careers and want a teaching qualification.

It includes an intensive professional experience program where students spend 60 days in practical experience teaching, and offers extensive, structured and closely supported experiences of secondary school teaching in different settings.

The course has the flexibility to enable students who have completed most but not all of the required undergraduate specialisation subjects to undertake the additional required subjects as part of the degree.

Structure

Students in the English, Mathematics, Science, and HSIE (Business Studies/Economics) majors must complete 96 credit points made up of 42 credit points of core subjects, a 30-credit-point major and 24 credit points of electives. Students in the major/minor majors must complete 96 credit points made up of 42 credit points of core subjects, a 42-credit-point major/minor, and 12 credit points of electives.

The core subjects draw on the foundation education disciplines of learning, motivation and adolescent psychology as well as addressing the education of students with special needs. The major component provides subjects that draw on teaching methods in the specific discipline area including incorporating key areas such as literacy and numeracy into lessons. The professional experience component aims to develop the professional knowledge, skills and values needed by an effective educator in students' major area.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

The bachelor degree should contain at least one major discipline study relevant to the first teaching area as described by the NSW curriculum and consistent with NESA Subject Content Knowledge Requirements. In the event the degree also contains a minor discipline study relevant to that area, students qualify to teach a second or additional subject. For a major discipline study this equates to six subjects, with no more than two subjects at first-year level and no fewer than two subjects at third-year level. A minor discipline study equates to four subjects, with no more than two subjects at the first-year level.

Applicants must submit a personal statement as part of their application.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 7.5 overall, with a minimum of 8.0 in both the speaking and listening modules, and a reading and writing score of 7.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 610-633 overall with TWE of 5.0, internet based: 102-109 overall with a writing score of 27; or PTE: 73-78 overall with a 79 in both the speaking and listening, and a reading and writing score of 65; or CAE: 191-199 overall with 200 in both the speaking and listening, and a reading and writing score of 185.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.
