About

The Master of Nurse Practitioner is intended for registered nurses with substantial experience in a specialty area who are looking to extend this experience and become experts in their field.

The course prepares students for advanced practice nursing as a nurse practitioner with expert clinical performance, critical decision-making and leadership skills.This course provides sustainable, high-quality education, developed and delivered in collaboration with contemporary experts in the field.

Each of the 12 subjects comprises a mix of theory, evidence-based and clinical practice, to be completed in part-time mode.

Subjects include a range of current healthcare contexts (including digital health, Indigenous health and primary health care) so students can practise safely and proficiently to provide person-centred, holistic health care and contribute to quality outcomes for those in their care.

Course requirements include 300 supernumerary clinical hours (i.e.

supervised practice outside the student's usual rostered hours) for consolidation and extension of learning.The Master of Nurse Practitioner has strong links to industry and is firmly grounded in contemporary healthcare practice.

The course closely integrates theory and practice-based learning and assessment in a combination of classroom, state-of-the-art simulation laboratories and authentic clinical settings.

Guest presenters include industry-based nurse practitioners and other experts from a range of clinical settings to ensure that knowledge and skills are evidence-based and clearly reflect advanced nursing as it is practised today.

Presenters adopt a range of teaching and learning strategies to enhance the student experience, such as field trips, media resources, podcasts and case-based scenarios.

These course features ensure that graduates are practice-ready, able to work in dynamic and changeable healthcare environments, and prepared to make significant contributions to positive patient outcomes.

Structure

Students must complete a total of 72 credit points, comprising 12 compulsory subjects.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

Applicants to this course need to meet the following additional requirements:

  • postgraduate qualification at Australian Qualifications Framework Level 8 in nursing
  • current registration as a nurse in Australia
  • a minimum of two years' full-time equivalent (FTE) as a registered nurse in a specified clinical field and two years' FTE of current advanced nursing practice in the same clinical field
  • concurrent employment in, or access to, the chosen/relevant clinical area of study
  • evidence of confirmed support to complete all professional experience requirements of the course, including integrated professional practice and supervision in accordance with NSW MoH policy: GL2012_004
  • Verification of advanced practice
  • Demonstration of Clinical Support team
  • Evidence of active involvement in professional organisations and contribution to the ongoing development of the profession
  • English language proficiency and communication skills to successfully undertake academic experience and integrated professional practice requirement throughout the program.

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP)

To receive a CSP offer - Places are limited and as such entry is competitive and assessment is based on grade point average (GPA) and demonstrated clinical excellence/merit.

Applications should include:

  • a certified copy of all relevant academic transcript(s)
  • Statement of Service on official letterhead confirming employment as a Transitional Nurse Practitioner
  • a personal statement. Please upload a completed CSP Personal Statement Application. Use template provided.
  • a CV to demonstrate previous relevant experience, and
  • any other relevant supporting documentation.

Offers made for CSPs cannot be deferred to future sessions.

Students' current nursing registration will be confirmed via the National Register of Practitioners. Students should ensure that details of their registration are up-to-date on this register.

The English proficiency requirement for local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.
