C10026v4 Bachelor of Business

University of Technology Sydney

About

The Bachelor of Business offers students a sound background in all areas of business through eight common core subjects undertaken in first year, followed by in-depth knowledge in one or more chosen areas of interest through the completion of a mix of majors, extended majors, sub-majors and electives.Students have the flexibility to select a course structure and major(s) after first year.

This means they have the opportunity to use Year 1 to explore all areas of business and ultimately guide their chosen specialisation in Year 2 and 3.

Students choose from 10 majors and 34 sub-majors, as well as four extended majors, giving them the flexibility to study a broad range of specialisations;

or do an in-depth study of a specialisation of their choosing.

In some degree configurations, students have the choice of four electives.

This is an opportunity to deepen expertise with additional business subjects, or add breadth by enrolling in subjects from other university faculties.

Structure

Students must complete 144 credit points, comprising eight foundation core subjects (48 credit points), and a standard stream (96 credit points) or an extended major stream (96 credit points). The standard stream comprises a first major (48 credit points), and either a second major (48 credit points), or two sub-majors (24 credit points each), or a single sub-major (24 credit points) in conjunction with elective subjects (24 credit points). The extended major stream comprises an extended major (72 credit points), and a sub-major (24 credit points) or elective subjects (24 credit points).

Students can choose any one of the following as a first major: Accounting, Economics, Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business, Management, Marketing or Advertising and Marketing Communications.

The choice of second major includes those listed above as well as Business Law or Information Technology.

Electives or structured elective sequences (totalling 24 credit points) can be taken from any faculty in the university, or from another university or its equivalent, with approval from the UTS Business School. Contact the Student Centre for more information about these options.

Industrial training/professional practice

Each business major within the course allows an optional internship program as an elective within the major or as a free elective. Students enrol in the subject number that applies to their major or extended major, as follow:

  • 21999 Business Internship applies to Management majors, including Human Resources Management and International Business
  • 22999 Business Internship applies to Accounting major
  • 23999 Business Internship applies to Economics majors
  • 24999 Business Internship applies to Marketing majors, including Advertising and Marketing Communications
  • 25999 Business Internship applies to Finance majors

Despite the separate subject numbers, Business Internship will operate as one subject with common requirements across all majors. The only difference will be the type of work that students engage in.

Students should not enrol business internship subject in the last session of study to ensure that completion of required hours of work will not impact on graduation and/or international students' visa conditions.

For further details, refer to the Business Internship.
