This course focuses on the analytical skills and technical knowledge that underpin the sophisticated data analysis tools on which key aspects of business activity rely.
These tools enable industry to capitalise on 'big data' by gaining insights through expert interpretation of results of statistical and other quantitative analyses.
In this course students study key areas of business activity and develop a broad range of mathematical, statistical, computational and data management skills, as well as experience in the use of information technology required for modern data analysis.Students also study a major in the language and culture of another country.Data science and analytics are key components in the success of knowledge-based industries and in the delivery of high-value data products.
This requires knowledge workers with sound mathematical skills as well as familiarity with the areas of business and policy development that can benefit from modelling, optimisation and data analysis.
Innovation in industry depends on the ability to use evidence to quickly test ideas and strategies.
This evidence is often embedded in a firm's big data.
The Bachelor of Science in Analytics equips its graduates with the unique mix of computational, mathematical and statistical skills to extract value from this data in a form that facilitates decision making. With one year of international experience gained from studying and living overseas, graduates find it easier to adapt to and work in another country or Australia.
Students are required to complete 240 credit points, comprising 144 credit points in science analytics and 96 credit points in international studies. The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies requires undergraduates to study a region or country major over a minimum of three years. It is not offered as a separate degree, but is completed only in combination with the professional degree program.
Graduation from the Bachelor of Science in Analytics component of the combined degree is not possible prior to completion of all components of the combined degree. Students wishing to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Analytics prior to completion of the international studies component of the combined degree must apply for transfer to the Bachelor of Science in Analytics (C10384) single degree program where they must complete all requirements for the stand-alone single degree.
Overseas study
Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.
Industrial training/professional practice
Students studying this course have an opportunity to undertake an internship subject and receive academic credit for their placement off campus (an external business or research institute) or on campus (UTS research institutes or departments), in a capacity relevant to their academic studies.
