About

The Diploma in Languages is designed to be taken concurrently with an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree program at UTS or another Australian university or as further learning.

It facilitates university students learning about language and culture and contemporary societies and broadens the opportunities associated with their professional degree or other studies.This course allows students to gain exposure to international perspectives and consolidate their linguistic capabilities in a language other than English.

Language options include:

Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

Language and culture subjects taken throughout the diploma draw on the UTS Model of Learning, which combines international and intercultural engagement with research-inspired learning.

Structure

Students must complete 48 credit points made up of six subjects drawn from a single language stream.

Course program

Curent students undertake the Diploma in Languages concurrently with another undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Students choose from one of six language options offered in the CBK91066 Choice (Language). Below is a sample course program for a full-time UTS student commencing in Autumn session and concurrently enrolled in the Diploma in Languages and the Bachelor of Communication (Digital and Social Media) (C10371).

Entry requirements

Applicants for admission must satisfy the selection criteria as specified by the faculty.

The Diploma is available to domestic (undergraduate and postgraduate) students only.

Applicants for admission must satisfy one of the following criteria:

  1. For current school leavers an ATAR of 80+ unless the student has studied the nominated language at HSC or IB level; or
  2. For non-current school leavers completion of a UTS recognised bachelor's degree or above in an Australian institution (or equivalent), or concurrent enrolment in a bachelor level degree at an Australian institution and one of the following:
  3. WAM (based on a minimum of 12 credit points) of 65; or
  4. ATAR of 80+; or
  5. previous study of the nominated language major at HSC or IB level

The English proficiency requirement for local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.
