About

Our online program provides an introduction to the principles and practices of teaching children.

While the certificate doesn't qualify you to teach in schools, it opens the door to a range of roles that support children in their learning.

It also prepares you for the Master of Teaching (Primary Education), which leads to teacher registration.

During your study, you'll develop foundational knowledge in these areas:

education concepts that underpin teaching strategies learning design that meets students' diverse needs practical approaches to teaching language and literacy (reading, writing, comprehension) models for teaching children maths (measurement, geometry, statistics and probability) research methods for sourcing and understanding education resources.

As education experts, we understand how students learn best.

We apply those principles when teaching you – assigning practical tasks that promote effective learning, such as creating real lesson plans.

You'll receive support throughout the course from our dedicated staff.

Structure

To complete the Graduate Certificate in Education (Primary) students will be required to complete:

Entry requirements

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you entry into this course. Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.

Completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent).

Credit for skills and past study

If you have completed study with another university or institution and believe you are eligible to receive credit for skills and past study, you can apply for advanced standing.

Applications for advanced standing can be made after a discussion with your course coordinator or academic adviser.

Additional information

Graduates who intend to progress to a teaching career may apply to enrol in the Master of Teaching (Primary Education) and prior to entering second semester of full time study within the course, students are required to sit the LANTITE test in order to demonstrate that their literacy and numeracy skills are within that expected of the top 30% of the population in Australia, as per National government requirements for initial teacher education.

Applicants for the Master of Teaching (Primary Education) will also be asked to complete an assessment of their non-academic attributes. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree from countries other than Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada or the Republic of Ireland will be required to complete IELTS (or equivalent): Overall 7.0 with Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5, Speaking 7.5

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Critically examine historical and contemporary issues in school education through a research lens at a local, national and international level;  
  2. Analyse the literacy learning needs of students across the full range of abilities including students with disabilities and special learning needs;  
  3. Analyse the numeracy learning needs of students across the full range of abilities including students with disabilities and special learning needs;  
  4. Evaluate a range of educational practices that support the diversity of students in primary education;  
  5. Analyse the efficacy of classroom teaching practices through reflective discussion that draws upon pedagogical theories; and  
  6. Design, conduct and report educational inquiry / research.
