Early childhood teaching is a truly rewarding professional career where you can really make a difference.The Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood and Primary)(Honours) program at the University of Newcastle aims to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for a highly successful career in teaching. Graduates of this program will be able to seek employment as Preschool and Early Childhood teachers, and K-6 (Primary) teachers in and beyond the New South Wales Government, Catholic, and Independent school sectors. The program aims to develop graduates who are inspirational teachers with the capability to act professionally, knowledgably and effectively in their educational destinations; insightful scholars with the capability to engage in rational enquiry into curriculum, policy and practice; and innovative leaders with the capability to play a constructive role in public discourse on and beyond education.

Bachelor of Laws (Honours) / Diploma of Legal Practice

The Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Diploma of Legal Practice is offered by the Faculty of Business and Law. Information on the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) programs is included here to provide background context for this program.The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program is offered only as a combined degree with the:The Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Diploma of Legal Practice degree meets the academic requirements needed to gain admission to the practice of law in New South Wales.During the first three years, combined degree students enrol in the courses offered by the Faculty of Business and Law as part of the LLB (Hons) program, as well as courses which contribute to their non-Law program. During the final two years students enrol in LAWS courses only. For information about the non-Law programs and recommended enrolment patterns for individual combined degrees, refer to the relevant program entries.Upon completion of their non-Law program students will be automatically transferred into the Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Diploma of Legal Practice for their final two years of Law studies. Students who wish to instead transfer into the Bachelor Laws (Honours) should consult the Program Convenor.

Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (pre 2019)

Within this combined degree program, students study a combination of Science and Law courses over a period of five years full-time. On completion of the first three years students will have completed all the required courses for the Bachelor of Science degree. In the final two years of the combined degree program students complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and may enrol in these two years on a less than full time basis.Students completing this combined degree program meet the academic requirements to practice law in NSW, however, they must also complete postgraduate professional training approved by the Legal Profession Admission Board if they wish to practise as a lawyer. Alternatively students completing this degree may apply for entry to the Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Diploma of Legal Practice program - see separate handbook entry - which allows immediate admission to legal practice on graduation. Students also have the skills and knowledge to contribute to scientific development in many areas of technology, industry, agriculture or the information revolution.The APAC (Australian Psychology Accreditation Council) accredited major sequence is not available to students who commence the program in 2012 or after. A Psychology major is available in the program, however is not accredited for students commencing study in 2012 onwards. Students who commence the program in 2012 or after, and who wish to complete an accredited Psychology program, are advised to apply for admission to the 4 year Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) program.Commencement in this program is only available in Semester 1. Due to timetabling issues this program is not available for a Semester 2 commencement.

Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (pre 2016)

Within this combined degree program, students study a combination of Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Laws courses over a period of five years full-time. On completion of the first three years students are eligible to graduate with a Bachelor of Business degree. In the final two years of the combined degree program students complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Laws and may enrol in these two years on a less than full time basis.Students completing this combined degree become specialists in Business and also meet the academic requirement to practice law in NSW. However, students must also complete postgraduate professional training approved by the Legal Profession Admission Board to practice as a solicitor. Alternatively, students completing this degree may apply for entry to the Bachelor of Laws/Diploma of Legal Practice Program - see separate handbook entry - which allows immediate admission to legal practice on graduation.Commencement in this program is only available in Semester 1. Due to timetabling issues this program is not available for a Semester 2 commencement.

Bachelor of Aboriginal Professional Practice / Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (pre 2019)

Within this combined degree program, students study a combination of Aboriginal Professional Practice courses and Law courses over a period of five years full-time. On completion of the first three years students will have completed all the courses required for the Bachelor of Aboriginal Professional Practice degree. In the final two years of the combined degree program students complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and may enrol in these two years on a less than full time basis. Alternatively, students completing this degree may apply for entry to the Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Diploma of Legal Practice Program - see separate handbook entry - which allows immediate admission to legal practice on graduation.Students completing this combined degree meet the academic requirements to practise law in NSW, and acquire skills and knowledge through the Aboriginal Professional Practice courses they have chosen.Commencement in this program is only available in Semester 1. Bachelor of Communication / Bachelor of Laws (Honours)

Within this combined degree program, students study a combination of Bachelor of Communication and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) courses over a period of five years full-time. On completion of the first three years students will have completed all the courses required for the Bachelor of Communication degree. In the final two years of the combined degree program students complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and may enrol in these two years on a less than full time basis.Students completing this combined degree meet the academic requirement to practice law in NSW, and also become specialists in a field of Communication. However, students must also complete postgraduate professional training approved by the Legal Profession Admission Board to practice as a solicitor. Bachelor of Social Science / Bachelor of Laws (Honours)

Within this combined degree program, students study a combination of Social Science and Law courses over a period of five years full-time. On completion of the first three years students will have completed all the required courses for the Bachelor of Social Science degree. In the final two years of the combined degree program students complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Laws and may enrol in these two years on a less than full time basis.Students completing this combined degree meet the academic requirement to practise law in NSW, and acquire skills and knowledge through their social science studies. Social Science is especially concerned with theories about life cycle, gender, class, race, work, social justice and social organisation. Its theories are the result of systematic thinking, observation and reflection. Social Science theory and research seek to contribute to the political and moral debates in society, rather than attempting to dictate precise solutions to social problems. Students wishing to practise Law must also complete postgraduate professional training approved by the Legal Profession Admission Board. Alternatively, students completing this degree may apply for entry to the Bachelor of Laws/Diploma of Legal Practice program which allows immediate admission to legal practice on graduation.Commencement in this program is only available in Semester 1.
