The program is designed to provide high-performing undergraduate students with the opportunity to undertake advanced academic study and to develop leadership skills for the profession of journalism. The aim is to round off the learning experiences provided at an undergraduate level by providing opportunities for research and leadership under close supervision. An Honours student is required to research a journalism-related issue in-depth and to present his/her findings in the form of a thesis. The Honours internship course gives students the opportunity to develop and enhance leadership and professional journalism skills.

Social Science (Honours)

The Bachelor of Social Science with Honours is a single year of full-time (or part time equivalent) advanced level study plus applied research in the behavioural and social sciences. Students are eligible to undertake Honours if they have completed a Bachelor of Social Science degree or its equivalent with an appropriate level of achievement. The honours program combines a flexible mix of coursework and independent study, during which students prepare and undertake an approved independent social science research project and submit a formal honours thesis. Honours students are encouraged to extend their specialised study in one of the areas of Health and Society, Social and Public Policy, Development or Criminal Justice and can be individually supervised across relevant UQ schools or and Research Centres. An Honours degree in Social Science allows students to develop, extend and consolidate their knowledge and skills in social science theory and research in relation to their specialisation area and is a valuable additional qualification on entering the job market.

The BSocSci provides diverse skills that will enable you to work in areas that address pressing social issues at local, national & international levels. Amongst these are rising poverty & inequality, the gender pay gap, homelessness, unemployment, Indigenous peoples & injustice, health & illness, refugees & the social impacts of climate change. Graduates develop skills, values & knowledge that are sought after by employers in the public and private sector, as well as non-government organisations, including the ability to communicate effectively across diverse audiences, theoretically informed cross-cultural awareness, social research skills, & a strong ethical compass. Course work provides in-depth knowledge & skills related to social issues, the ability to identify & analyse social issues & problems, & to develop solutions based in policy & practice.

Students will acquire skills which will enable them to work without close supervision in a research environment in industry or government, or to proceed to a research higher degree.

The UQ School of Economics is Queensland's largest, most experienced and influential economics school. Graduates are equipped to work on important policy and decision challenges in business and government. The program focuses on resource allocation and decision making. As a BEcon student you can pursue individual interests and professional specialisations through a wide choice of courses. Study areas available include business economics; economic history; econometrics; environmental and resource economics; financial markets; labour economics; health economics; international trade and development; macroeconomics; and microeconomics.

Commerce

The Bachelor of Commerce program prepares you for a career in accounting, banking, financial management, information systems and management. Compulsory courses in the degree build a solid foundation of business skills that you will apply to many decisions and issues in the contemporary business environment. These core skills are then further developed in your second and third years as you specialise by undertaking one or two majors. Commerce majors are in accounting, business information systems and finance. Completion of the Bachelor of Commerce degree with the accounting major, for example, allows students to apply for associate membership of the professional accounting bodies. The combination of core skills and specialist knowledge learned in the Bachelor of Commerce will ensure you can adapt effectively to the ever-changing business environment and as a result be in high demand with employers.

A BA graduate is someone who has gained skills and knowledge and can apply these skills in many different jobs, careers and life situations. You can choose from a wide range of majors, tailoring the degree to suit your own particular career aspirations. The program is also available in dual degree format. The honours program requires an additional year of study and calls for greater specialisation in a chosen area at a high standard of scholarship.
