The Professional Writing and Publishing (PWP) Major will equip students with the skills, understanding and discipline to work in corporate communications and media in state, federal and local government, business and industry, the not-for-profit sector, arts organisations, and the magazine and book industries. These areas continue to demonstrate a significant growth nationally and internationally. It is expected that the degree will attract students with a strong command of the English language from a range of undergraduate disciplines from not only Humanities but also science and health sciences. Students will learn to convey information, issues and debate to colleagues, clients, constituents, and stake-holders by creating narratives that are rhetorically effective, ethically aware, well-researched, and cogently argued, in a range of media, genres and forms including print and online media, features and profiles, speeches, reports, discussion papers, creative non-fiction, and promotion writing. Uniquely, the Curtin PWP program integrates creative practice and academic inquiry with training and experience in real-world technical and professional skills and competencies. It aims to foster its students’ creative non-fiction-writing talents, developing their skills in storytelling whilst training them in the specialised genres and conventions of professional communication and delivering advanced instruction in research, writing, editing and publishing. This equips students to contribute to and influence public discourse which is increasing being driven by narrative: stories that capture an organisation’s identity, aspirations, and endeavours. Students will undertake a major project in their second year of study. They will also have an opportunity to practice their skills and develop their portfolio through internship with a professional organization. Students with outstanding results will have an option to further strengthen their critical capacity in preparation for possible PhD study.

MJRP-PROJM v.1 Project Management Major (Master Sust Built Env)

In this major students will focus on the wide variety of resources required in order to carry out the various project activities. In first semester students will explore project procurement; acquisition processes; procurement planning; source selection; procurement documents and contract administration. In preparing for the second semester capstone unit students will explore the concepts, methods, tools and techniques of research and investigation needed for the production of a research problem, research design and methodology and literature review. In second semester these research skills are used to independently solve problems in an authentic professional environment, while applying knowledge and skills in the integrative management of scope, communication, procurement, and human resources to a capstone project.

This course enhances knowledge and skills in accounting and related aspects of financial management and business law, in order to equip students for a career in professional accounting and related fields in Australia and internationally. CPA Australia Extension Stream is designed to meet the educational requirements of CPA (Australia). Accounting Foundation Stream is designed to meet the educational requirements of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA). Professional Recognition Students completing the course may satisfy the educational requirements for possible membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and the Certified Practising Accountants Australia, depending on their selection of streams in second year.

MJRP-PLANN v.1 Planning Major (Master Sust Built Env)

In this major students will develop an understanding of planning theories through critical examination and investigation of the links between planning theory and practice. In the first semester of this major students will be exploring the scope for new planning theories and preparing for their research project in second semester by critically examining quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and reviewing literature. In second semester students will design, implement and present an individual research program on an urban and regional planning issue.

MJRP-OSCNM v.1 Wound, Ostomy and Continence Practice Major (MSc Health Practice)

Students studying in this major will focus on the care and management of patients with acute and chronic wounds and an ostomy (those who have had a bowel or bladder diversion), and patients with continence conditions (those with bladder and bowel control and associated skin care issues). Students will need to be registered nurses working in a dedicated practice setting and will combine learning from the applied clinical sciences to the practice context. The major aims to take nurses who wish to specialise in the area to be competent in all aspects of wound, ostomy and continence practice.

MJRP-MNPTM v.2 Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Major (M ClinPhys)

This major promotes an advanced standard of musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice through biomedical sciences knowledge, clinical and research skills development, and a broad appreciation of the concepts of evidence-based practice. In recent years a code of practice has been developed which considers the scope, limitations, evidence base and research prospects of musculoskeletal physiotherapy as it relates to community health care. The development of confidence and professionalism in clinical practice is also promoted. This is achieved primarily through the development of advanced patient examination and treatment skills, advanced clinical communication skills and prescription of appropriate patient management. This major within the Master of Clinical Physiotherapy focuses on the integration of evidence-based practice and contemporary methods of clinical practice. It is designed to develop advanced knowledge, skill and clinical competencies in musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice. Professional Recognition Graduates who are registered with the Physiotherapists Registration Board of Western Australia can apply to have this qualification listed. The award of Master of Clinical Physiotherapy ( Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy) qualifies graduates for level two membership of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia (MPA), which is a special interest group of the Australian Physiotherapy Association. The MPA is a member of the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manual Therapists. Titled membership of MPA provides the first stage towards Fellowship of the Australian College of Physiotherapy and recognition as a Specialist Physiotherapist.
