Curtin University

This major/stream is part of a larger course. Information is specific to the major/stream, please refer to the course for more information. Data is used in all industries to drive innovation and growth. Data Scientists are able to harness the power of data to be central in these processes. A Bachelor of Science (Data Science) alongside a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Commerce is a powerful combination that will enable graduates to use data to solve problems through an in-depth understanding of appropriate analytics and the field in which the solutions will be applied. Through the BSc (Data Science) Double Degree Major, students will gain a high level of computer programming competency, the capacity to apply appropriate statistical procedures to large datasets from different sources, an understanding of contemporary digital media, and the ability to communicate data-driven solutions to a range of audiences. The field of data science is truly interdisciplinary and is therefore taught by experts from an array of discipline areas including Computing, Mathematics and Statistics, Humanities and Economics.

MDDU-CHENG v.3 Chemical Engineering Double Degree Major (BEng Hons/BCom)

Curtin University

This major/stream is part of a larger course. Information is specific to the major/stream, please refer to the course for more information. Chemical or Process engineering involves finding the best sequence of physical, chemical and biological processing steps, and the right operating conditions, to convert raw materials into higher value products safely, economically and on a large scale. Gas processing, oil refining, minerals processing and metals production are among the most commonly recognised applications of chemical engineering, but the discipline encompasses a diversity of products that serve the needs of society. These include LNG, LPG, petrochemicals and polymers, fertilisers and agrichemicals, cement and lime, industrial and fine chemicals, paper and board, consumer products, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology products, food and beverages, power and clean water. In this double degree major, students examine the development, design, assessment and management of processes for the production of a wide range of materials. It covers the theory and applications of thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer and reaction engineering. Building on this foundation, students go on to explore process control, synthesis and design, risk management and safety, and research studies for general chemical processes. Course Accreditation This course is accredited by Engineers Australia and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). Professional Recognition Engineers Australia and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) recognise the course as fulfilling the academic requirements for graduate membership. On obtaining the necessary experience graduates will be eligible for corporate membership of Engineers Australia and IChemE.

MDDU-CCOEN v.2 Civil and Construction Engineering Double Degree Major (BEng/BCom)

Curtin University

This major/stream is part of a larger course. Information is specific to the major/stream, please refer to the course for more information. Civil Engineering involves the application of basic scientific and technological principles to the design and construction of facilities necessary for the welfare of the community. It is concerned with such projects as railways, harbours and docks, road systems, bridges, water supply and wastewater treatment, dams, tunnels and underground construction, power projects, offshore structures, and commercial and industrial buildings. The effective practice of civil engineering necessitates a strong background in the mathematical and physical sciences, an understanding of the properties of construction materials such as steel, concrete and natural aggregates and an ability to evaluate the performance of structures under variable forms of loading. Many engineering projects require a close working relationship with other groups - planners, architects, environmental scientists - and an appreciation of the impact of civil works on society in terms of both social obligations and finance. The civil engineer also needs training in the management of resources, equipment, materials and finance. Professional Recognition Graduates fulfil the stage one competencies stipulated by Engineers Australia (EAust) as the pathway to chartered engineer status (CPEng).
