Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) / Bachelor of Business (Management)

This double degree program has been specifically designed to meet the current and future needs of the mechanical engineering industry. Many of the key roles in mechanical engineering organisations are held by engineering managers. After initially working as mechanical engineers, they move to positions where they are primarily concerned with management. They are involved with supervising and developing staff, planning, achieving organisational objectives and maintaining a positive and motivated workforce and environment. These activities are common to all engineering activities in the public or private sector.The objectives of the program are to prepare you for a career of leadership in industry that depends on mechanically-based technology.The program consists of core mechanical engineering and management courses, and elective courses from the two disciplines. The electives on offer enable you to develop specialist skills in areas of particular interest to you.Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering)The overall objective of the program is for its graduates to be employable and effective mechanical engineers in a national and international context. It is designed to prepare them for a wide range of career possibilities by developing particular graduate attributes which will be of on-going benefit to them, industry and society as a whole. Graduates of this program have been prepared to practice as effective engineers at a high level. They will have demonstrated the ability to utilise fundamental knowledge and skills in mathematics and the sciences underpinning engineering. They will have demonstrated sound skills and appropriate understanding of disciplines relevant to mechanical engineering and its practice. They will have demonstrated suitable design skills, appropriate creativity, intellectual discipline, and professional skills relevant to working with others. They will have demonstrated ability to communicate their ideas in a way appropriate to their profession and also in a general way appropriate to communication with the wider community. They will also have demonstrated that they can learn in a self-directed way that would support professional extension in their working lives, and adaptation through technological and social change. The Mechanical Engineering program as a whole has a real world focus with a problem / project based active learning approach. The first two years of the program are common with the Automotive Engineering program offered by the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. In these years the students of the programs are exposed to fundamentals of engineering sciences, mathematics, engineering design, and engineering professional practice. In the later years of the program, specialist mechanical elective courses are offered in various streams associated with the wide variety of staff interest and expertise. The academic staff members teaching the course are mechanical engineering practitioners and together with the specialist knowledge they offer, the program is designed to provide its students with a number of opportunities for industrial interaction. In summary the program focuses on the development of student knowledge, skills, and attitudes in a structured way that together addresses the program objectives.Bachelor of Business (Management)Contemporary managers deal with a range of complex issues. They are expected to make business decisions against a backdrop of changing economic and social events, while relating global changes in markets and business activities to local needs. Managers are increasingly expected to exercise strong ethical judgements, and be dedicated to a process of continuous learning about their work. Managers are also expected to work well with those around them in a variety of organisational structures from lose teams to highly formalised decision processes. Flexibility and the ability to work with others are critical capabilities. They are concerned with planning what the organisation will do, organising its activities, managing and developing staff, and co-ordinating a range of activities through the effective processing of information.The Bachelor of Business: Management or BBus (Mgt) program is focused on developing a range of business capabilities which will assist you in relating your own skills and abilities to the needs of business and organisations. It is designed to appeal to you if you wish to gain a general management degree with the option of specialising in certain key areas of management.

Bachelor of Arts (International Studies)

Bachelor of Arts (Music Industry)

The Bachelor of Arts (Music Industry) program provides an innovative approach to the study of music in local and global contexts. Students are prepared for a variety of careers within the music industries and the broader creative industries.You will explore contemporary trends and issues through a combination of practical, project-based work and academic, theoretical study. Studying in the centre of Melbourne exposes you to thriving local scenes, buskers, bars, clubs, theatres and festivals, in the exciting music capital of Australia.Through a studio-based learning environment, you will experience a variety of teaching modes, such as lectures, seminars, work integrated learning and problem-solving workshops. You will learn about key music technologies, global music cultures, popular music scenes, music business practice and live music performance. Beyond the specifics of the music industries, you will also investigate broader cultural, social and historical perspectives through undertaking a sequence of contextual courses (for example, Asian Media and Culture, or Cinema Studies). Completing a work placement will enable you to develop networks within the industry, and there will also be opportunities to study overseas as part of your degree. A selection of music industry electives are offered that focus on music video, sound design, and DJing and electronic dance music, as well as electives from across the university.

You will experience a variety of interactive learning and teaching approaches, including both face to face and online. You will have the opportunity for Professional Experience, within a variety of educational settings that provide learning activities linking theory with practice. This program is primarily delivered in face-to-face mode at the Brunswick Campus.You will undertake a capstone experience in the final year course TCHE2514 Professional Experience: Applied Education Project, in which you will conduct an independent research project into an aspect of your teaching practice and demonstrate your achievement of the AITSL standards for graduating teachers in your final teaching placement.On completion of the program you will be a professional practitioner within the field of education possessing a broad knowledge of learning, teaching, curriculum and assessment. You will be eligible to apply for teacher registration and teach in schools, however you will have skills knowledge and experience to also work in private enterprise, government agencies and community based organisations. You will use innovative applications of communication technology to support your teaching practice. Through critical reflection you will work ethically and collaboratively with colleagues and external professional and community representatives.

The capstone focuses on enhancing your employability skills and easing your transition from student to graduate teacher. You will integrate knowledge, skills and their application from your prior studies. You will continue to develop and conslidate your professional portfolios. You will complete a final teaching placement over an eight week period during the final semester. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a mentoring role to assist a year one student transition into university and life as a teacher. You will complete a range of assessment tasks to ensure that you are classroom ready, including the preparation of curriculum planning for foundation to year 12; applying for teaching positions, preparing a resume, responding to selection criteria and mock interviews; and the development of assessment and reporting processes and documents. You will also complete a leadership module which covers a range of skills, issues and processes essential to be a leader within school settings.This program requires on-campus attendance. Some courses include on-line components.

Bachelor of Nursing

The Bachelor of Nursing Program offers a comprehensive curriculum inclusive of, but not limited by, the provision of education in relation to acute, tertiary and primary health care across the lifespan and in a range of contexts. Some courses may include on-line learning and teaching components. Work integrated learning (WIL) is a feature of the program. In Professional Experience Practice (PEP) courses (NURS2092 PEP 1, NURS1150 PEP 2, NURS1151 PEP 3, NURS1152 PEP 4 and NURS1153 PEP 5) you will undertake supervised professional placements in prearranged clinical settings for a prescribed period of time. Specific learning outcomes will be achieved over the period of your WIL experience. At all times you will undertake nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse and function within your scope of practice as an undergraduate nurse.NURS2155 Preparation for Practice and Leadership is a capstone course in which you will integrate knowledge, skills and their application from your previous nursing studies and prepare your transition from undergraduate student to practising Registered Nurse.This program requires on-campus attendance. The program is delivered full time, in face-to-face mode, supported by various blended learning activities (including on-line).

Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship)

Bachelor of Business (International Business) (Applied)

The Bachelor of Business (International Business) program provides you with technical and critical knowledge and skills in international business to apply in diverse global contexts. A broad-based curriculum incorporates: international business, finance, trade, logistics, responsible business, cross-cultural management, political economy of international business, and creativity, innovation and design. The program focuses on professional training in contemporary international business. In addition to the core program courses you can take a range of minors and electives from across the School of Management and College of Business, and also from the International Studies program (in the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies) and from the University more widely. You can also learn a language and engage in study abroad. Over the duration of this program you will participate in a variety of learning experiences which are designed to support you in developing skills as an International Business graduate. Learning and teaching approaches for this program may include lectures and tutorials, problem-based learning, case studies, work-integrated learning, assignments, projects and examinations. Activities and assignments are designed to facilitate theory application and peer learning in a friendly, open atmosphere. This program provides opportunities to apply and consolidate your knowledge and skills in a practical workplace setting during the third year of the program. Upon completion of your practical placement, you will employ the tools and experiences gained to innovate, design and solve business-related problems in two business design project courses. The program includes the capstone courses BUSM4689 Political Economy of International Business, BUSM4367 International Business Design Project 1, and BUSM4368 International Business Design Project 2 which will provide you with the opportunity to critically reflect on and consolidate your theoretical and practical learning. These courses will promote the application of the curriculum in discipline related real-world scenarios leading to work readiness or entry to graduate studies.The program will prepare you to work as a professional in a wide range of industries, government and non- government organisations that increasingly require high level international skills, such as business, finance, trade, logistics, corporate responsibility and management. You will develop an understanding of the history of crime and justice administration and the ways in which it is embedded in contemporary cultures.The program is designed to prepare you for a wide variety of careers in criminal justice areas such as policing, corrections, court administration, customs and regulatory law enforcement. Specifically, the program is designed to give you a broad foundation of skills, knowledge and capabilities for actively participating in criminal justice administration, including the three major sub-systems of the industry: policing, courts and corrections. You will also have the opportunity to specialise in one or more areas including: civil law; criminal law; courts; corrections; critical criminology; dispute resolution; gendered violence; indigenous studies; international security; policing; social justice; and youth justice.These specialisations are aligned with professional knowledge and capabilities relevant to different careers in justice. In your final year, you will be provided with a vocational capstone experience in the 50 day HWSS2181 Justice and Legal Internship in a criminal justice organisation and a conceptual capstone experience in SOCU2116 Contemporary Criminology through which you will integrate and synthesise your knowledge, connect theory to practice, and demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.Successful completion of this program provides a pathway into a Masters. Upon successful completion of this program you may also be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University.
