Bachelor of International Hotel and Resort Management

This industry-based course is designed to provide students with the essential knowledge, competencies and professional perspectives required by management in contemporary hotel and resort organisations. It provides students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills for a career in the hotel and resort sector. The course provides an overview of the hotel and resort sector in the context of the broader tourism and hospitality industries, as well as focusing on the application of key aspects of marketing, service management, financial management, research methods, and strategic management. Specialist units focus upon areas including food and beverage management, rooms division management, international resort and facilities management, and contemporary hospitality and tourism issues. Students also choose electives such as beverage appreciation, business events management, cruise ship tourism and/or special interest tourism to suit their needs and interests. The course also provides approved students (on application and subject to a selection process) with the opportunity to apply for an internship placement with a leading hotel or resort business.

Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Environmental) Honours

This course includes a range of studies in Civil Engineering combined with a special focus on the impacts that engineering projects have on the environment. Many engineering projects, especially those that may impact on the quality of land, water and air, require detailed environmental analysis to identify and mitigate any chances that the project will adversely affect the environment. It is essential to consider both the short and long-term sustainability of such projects and their environmental consequences. Areas of study within the course include a foundation in physical and engineering sciences along with computer aided design, engineering materials, surveying, and other core civil engineering topics. This is followed by more specialist civil engineering content areas including structural analysis, steel and concrete design, road design and construction, construction technology and site management, and project management. The course also includes advanced studies in environmental risk assessment and management, water and wastewater treatment, water distribution systems and wastewater collection systems, waste disposal and management, air-borne pollution control and the principles that ensure long-term sustainable engineering design solutions. The course focuses on the development of knowledge and skills relevant to professional engineering practice, and along with a sound theoretical base, includes strong elements of practical problem-solving, teamwork and project development resulting in strong analytical skills and the ability to lead complex projects.

Therefore all WAAPA courses ensure that graduates gain skills in strong communication, cultural awareness and teamwork. Most importantly, courses also facilitate critical appraisal to inspire confidence in creativity and innovation, the generation of new ideas, consideration of wider societal and cultural aspects related to their practice, and an international perspective in teaching and learning. In addition, where appropriate, units will address social and cultural sustainability in the following ways; customer service and duty of care in public performance environments; engagement with corporate and community partners; building social and cultural confidence in students via exposure to diverse public performance environments; and workplaces locally, nationally, regionally and internationally.

Civil engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the human-made environment, including buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, dams and other large physical structures. Areas of study within this course include a foundation in physical and engineering sciences, along with computer-aided design, engineering materials, structural design and analysis, steel and concrete design, surveying, road design and construction, water supply engineering, construction technology and site management, and project management. The first year of this course includes a set of eight units that are common across all engineering honours courses. This allows students the opportunity to develop a better understanding of the various engineering disciplines on offer and the flexibility, if desired, to switch to another engineering discipline/course without penalty after the first year of study. The course focuses on the development of knowledge and skills relevant to professional engineering practice, and along with a sound theoretical base, includes strong elements of practical problem-solving, teamwork and project development. As a result, as well as having multiple technical and transferable skill competencies, graduates will have strong analytical skills and the ability to lead complex projects.

Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours

The profession of speech pathology deals with the science and social impact of communication and swallowing disorders, which may be acquired or developmental, and are caused by cognitive and/or physical impairment. This course teaches students to become speech pathologists and covers the full range of skills necessary to assess, plan, and treat people with communication and swallowing difficulties in a range of different contexts. Academically and professionally, the course is closely aligned with areas such as speech science, psychology, audiology, education, linguistics, and allied healthcare. Additionally, this Honours program introduces students to the research process through the development and completion of a research project.
