Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design)

Industrial design has its roots in the designing and making of products, and the understanding and application of design in manufacturing. With a Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) you’ll apply both traditional and advanced digital techniques to a wide range of products, while gaining a knowledge of both materials and production processes. You’ll explore advanced communication skills, including digital manipulation and fabrication via additive and subtractive technologies, and will develop user-centred approaches to developing products.The course will allow you to develop in-depth understandings of your specialised area while also expanding your potential as a designer. You’ll graduate as a resilient and adaptive design professional capable of solving a wide array of problems, and able to make significant contributions to any interdisciplinary industrial design team.Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is embedded in this course, providing you with opportunities for direct industry engagement at every level of your study. You’ll be involved in projects which realise creative design solutions for real-world clients, and industry projects in the past have included work with Breville, Sunbeam, Tiller Design, Blue Sky Design, Belconnen Community Council and Design Resource. Previous student WIL internships have been with furniture, lighting and product design company, SKEEHAN, and transport design firm TransitGraphics.Signature overseas short-term study options have been tailored specifically to this course so that high-achieving students have an opportunity to work with leading designers and students at prestigious overseas institutions. Students can choose to use their breadth units for their overseas Study Abroad experience.High-achieving students also have the option to take units in the Masters of Design Strategies in their final year of study.

Bachelor of Communication and Media (Sports Media)

You’ll explore the media’s role in the reporting of sport and its influence on Australian society and the broader global context.Throughout this highly practical media course you’ll learn how to research, produce and present sports stories in text, visual and audio formats for mobile, online, social, broadcast and print media. You’ll also report on ‘live’ sporting events that often captivate the nation and the world, interview elite athletes and coaches, and host your own podcast and TV panel show.Exclusive Work Integrated Learning opportunities exist thanks to the course’s distinctive location in Canberra and relationships with professional sporting clubs and organisations. You’ll undertake a compulsory six-month internship as both a digital media producer for a sporting organisation, and as a sports journalist in a media newsroom. Previous internship hosts have included the Canberra Times, Canberra Raiders, ACT Brumbies, Capital Football, Basketball ACT, Fox Sports, Cricket ACT and AFL Canberra.You’ll graduate career-ready with an exceptional portfolio of published work, including news stories, videos, podcasts, photography and even your own website. You’ll graduate with the full suite of in-demand skills which will allow you to produce engaging quality journalism in a multi-platform media environment.During the course, you’ll undertake 100 hours of real-world industry experience through internship placements with local and national media organisations like the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery, ABC TV and radio, Canberra Times, Channel 9, Sky News, Australian Associated Press, 2CC and Win Television.Your study will finish in the production of a feature-length multi-platform journalism project and will be presented using expertise gained in print, video and audio journalism. Students are encouraged to get involved in the student radio station 87.8 UCFM, producing and presenting programs, and writing for the UC student magazine Curieux. Throughout this course you’ll leverage your interest in filmmaking as you expand your creative thinking, explore the craft of storytelling and, ultimately, transform into a professional film practitioner. You’ll understand the ins and outs of making a film and, most importantly, the answer to the question: “What film are you going to make?”You’ll make full use of our digital cinema workflow to put your theoretical knowledge into practice, with access to industry-standard resources including: digital cinematography cameras and lenses; professional tripods and dollies; lighting equipment; location sound recording mixers, microphones and booms; studio and set construction facilities; green screen studio and compositing software; and professional editing and colour grading software. You’ll have the opportunity to develop creative practice in filmmaking and specialise in a technical crew role. Internship units allow you to form industry relationships and engage with the social and professional world of film production.Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is at the very centre of the Bachelor of Arts (Film Production), with the course content and structure developed with ongoing input and feedback from the Australian film production industry. You’ll learn from industry-active professionals and world-class scholars and will work and study in real-world situations through project work, internships, professional experience, mentorships, and international study opportunities.Students are required to undertake 100 WIL hours, which can be mixed across multiple sources, including editing experience with a production company, marketing with a film festival or a camera traineeship with a television station. Past student placements have included Wildbear, Channel 9, Canberra Short Film Festival, Stronger Than Fiction, National Film and Sound Archive, Canberra International Film Festival, By George!, Screen Canberra and the ABC TV/Playmaker Media drama series ‘The Code’.Standard entry to this course is by selection rank, but a portfolio entry is also possible.High-achieving students may be eligible for enrolment in the Bachelor of Arts and Design (Honours).
