NOTE: This course is for students wishing to pursue our Optometry Pathway.Optometry is an important and rewarding career within the health industry. Optometrists support eye and vision care for a range of patients, from babies and children through to the elderly. They provide a variety of services including vision checks and tests, treating eye injuries, glasses and lens fitting, and monitoring of eye conditions.With our Optometry Pathway Course, you will study one year on the Launceston campus at the University of Tasmania. This foundation year will cover the basics in chemistry, anatomy and physiology, physics, biochemistry and cell biology. You will then transfer to South Australia for a further four years of study, graduating with a Bachelor of Medical Science (Vision Science)/Master of Optometry, from Flinders University.During your study with Flinders University, you will undertake a range of placements within the industry. Most of these placements occur within private practice, and where possible your placements will be organised at facilities within Tasmania. This means you will be learning from the professionals who you will one day work alongside.This double degree from Flinders University prepares you with the skills you will need to provide vital optometry services to the community. When you finish the degree, you will have the qualifications to become a registered optometrist. You can choose to begin your practice, or follow a pathway through to a career in research.

This course will prepare you to work as exercise scientists, sport scientists or to pursue research or professional/allied health with postgraduate studies.You learn a wide range of human life sciences, including biology, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology and psychology as well as their practical application.Practical placements will help you gain the knowledge and skills to provide assessment, monitoring and program prescription for fitness and exercise in a diverse range of populations from healthy adults to elite athletes.As a graduate you may find employment in the private and public sectors or you may also be able to pursue research in exercise science and apply for post-graduate study in areas such as sports science, clinical exercise physiology, physiotherapy, and medicine.This is a 3 year course based in Launceston, Tasmania.The Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science provides graduates with the knowledge and skills to gain accreditation as Exercise Scientists with Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and is undergoing accreditation by ESSA at Exercise Scientist level.

You will also learn about the security and access to food, and the social responsibility of a nutritionist.This course also provides clear career pathways for graduates seeking employment or postgraduate study in the area of Nutrition and Dietetics to deliver a high quality health service in a variety of settings.New Course Majors from 2021Dietetic PathwayThis pathway will allow you to study units which align to the prerequisite requirements for application to postgraduate programs including a Master of Dietetics or a Master of Nutrition and Dietetics in Australia. If you are interested in working with individuals or larger populations, this major will help you understand why and how the foods we eat impact on our health and wellbeing. Along with foundation nutrition science units, this major prepares you to understand the reasons why many health conditions have poor eating practices at their core, and provides an evidence-base for appropriate nutrition in chronic disease prevention. As a graduate of the dietetic pathway major, you may be eligible for registration with the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA) as an Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) and, after further completion of relevant work experience, as a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr).Public Health NutritionThe focus of this major is on the prevention of diet-related disease and the promotion of optimal nutrition and health in populations. Whether you are interested in working at the grass-roots community level or on the global stage, this major will provide you with the theoretical and practical knowledge to protect and improve the health of communities. This major provides a pathway to the Master of Public Health at the University of Tasmania, and a career in public health and health advocacy, working with government, non-government organisations, industry, and community groups. As a graduate of the public health nutrition major, you may be eligible for registration with the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA) as an Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) and, after further completion of relevant work experience, as a Registered Public Health Nutritionist (RPHNutr).Functional Foods and HealthFunctional foods are foods and beverages with ingredients that have evidence for providing beneficial effects on human health. The focus of this major is on developing practical and theoretical knowledge of the functional food industry from a nutrition and evidenced-based health perspective. Advances in technology and research are influencing food production practices resulting in human nutrition innovations that change the variety of food available to the consumer with health benefits. This major provides students with knowledge of the chemical composition of foods and their biological effects on the human body. Students will develop skills that prepare them to work in food science, health, supplement and nutrition industries, and government and regulatory agencies.
