Bachelor of Biomedical Science

You can utilise this course to embark on an exciting career in biomedical research or for entry into postgraduate health courses, including postgraduate medicine. The course will provide you with a strong foundation in the medical sciences, and advanced laboratory skills through hands on practical experimentation and online interactive learning. The new curriculum offers a quality syllabus that emphasises critical thinking and active learning via an inquiry team-based learning – a strategy producing skilled, knowledgeable and lifelong learners. In addition, you will build on intellectual, analytical, organisational, personal and interpersonal skills. You will gain in-depth understanding of how the body works from the molecular level through to physiological functions. Students will expand and apply knowledge of human biomedical science, to the causes, diagnosis and treatment of disease at molecular, cellular and system levels. Core areas of study include: physiology anatomy biochemistry cell biology medical microbiology immunology molecular biology human genetics.

This course prepares you for entry into postgraduate medicine and other postgraduate courses such as physiotherapy, pharmacy and dietetics. It includes essential physiology, anatomy and biochemistry prerequisites. You’ll also learn up-to-date information on disease and medical applications. Our Bachelor of Biomedicine has a particular focus on the role of exercise and nutrition in medicine. You’ll design and analyse research methods and findings. You’ll undertake a research project that can provide a platform to begin a research degree. New specialised units cover topics including: bioinformatics medical imaging exercise in medicine. This course will ensure you have broadly applicable science knowledge, and are ready for postgraduate study.

The course doesn't provide teacher-registration. Instead, it offers education skills and knowledge to work in a number of community and private settings, including: mentoring and tutoring programs community programs public and welfare services after-school care teacher aide positions. You can steer your education-focused career into an area of personal passion, with a relevant major or minor from our broad options. Possibilities include: PE/physical education (secondary) arts (music, visual arts and media) community (health, welfare, disability or psychology) English (literary studies and teaching English as an additional language) humanities (history, cultural or Indigenous studies) ICT (digital media) maths outdoor education science specialisations. Please note: this course does not provide you with the prerequisites for teacher registration. COURSE LOCATION If you are a domestic student, you can choose to study at the Werribee Campus for your first year only. After that, you will complete your course at the Footscray Park Campus. International students study all years of this course at our Footscray Park Campus.

We are one of the few universities in Australia to offer a Bachelor of Education (P-12) which allows you to teach at any school level. If you’re unsure which age group you’ll be suited to teaching, this is an excellent way to keep your options open. You’ll learn the latest techniques to support students in their learning. You’ll also get real work experience through 80 days of supervised teaching practice in primary and secondary schools.
