MJRU-JOURN v.2 Journalism Major (BA)

The Journalism major forges a strong link between the theoretical and practical work of journalism. It combines professional outcomes, scholarship, creativity, technological skills and intellectually rewarding academic study with an emphasis on deeper understandings, and allows students to undertake innovative, cutting-edge project work. Students will have the opportunity to develop abilities to research, prepare and publish journalistic stories across the media. Skills are developed in professional journalism and there are opportunities to publish on a variety of media platforms including online, radio and on television. The course also allows for students to incorporate studies in related media areas, such as screen arts, design, social sciences and in other disciplines across the University. Students studying Journalism as their primary major will study their first year with the STRU-BAMCC Media, Culture and Creative Arts First Year Stream. Major Overview Note Students choosing this major within the Bachelor of Arts degree may also choose a second major or an elective stream. Choosing a second major allows students to study in an additional discipline area. Choosing an elective stream allows students to undertake further study in the discipline of their first major or choose from a variety of units from around the University.

MJRU-JAPAN v.1 Japanese Major (BA)

Completion of this major will provide students with the ability to communicate effectively in Japanese cultural terms, with a focus on the use of the Japanese language. The major also provides insights into Japanese social and cultural frameworks and business practices in Japan. Students commence with JAPN1000 Beginning Japanese, or a more advanced unit depending on the student's level of Japanese, after consultation with the Japanese teaching staff. Students studying Japanese as their primary major will study their first year with the STRU-BALAN Language First Year Stream. International Relations is the study of how the many parts of the international system relate to each other, and what this means for individual people. Its central aim is to understand how and why the world is the way we see it today, giving us some hope that we can plan for its future. The major covers the fields of comparative politics, international relations theory, foreign policy, strategic studies, and political history. Topics include economic globalisation; regional studies with an emphasis on Asia; international security considered broadly; human rights; and environmental change. It aims to empower and strengthen the well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach that encompasses traditional healing practices in the context of mental health best care and treatment modalities. This Major will provide students with comprehensive mental health strategies, skills, knowledge and treatment methodologies to engage and inter-relate with Aboriginal community mental health patients who may be suffering with a mental health illness. Today, Mathematics plays an important role in the optimisation of industrial systems and is used in many fields, including technology, natural science, engineering, medicine, finance and the social sciences such as sociology and psychology. The Industrial Optimisation Major is designed to provide students with the skills in mathematics, engineering and computing and to apply them to problems arising in business, industry and government. The Major includes units in advanced calculus and linear algebra that provide foundation knowledge as well as units in modelling and optimisation, network design and analysis, logistics, supply chain networks, transportation networks, computational mathematics, statistics and probability. Industry-based units will help you to experience real applications. Graduates are well-equipped with the tools to address the key problems that need to be solved to improve the efficiency and productivity of business and industry.

This major offers both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students the opportunity to gain understanding of the cultural diversity and cultural ways of Indigenous Australians. Students examine, from Indigenous Australian perspectives, the cultural, social, economical, and political issues that confront Indigenous people. All the units in this major are underpinned by principles of social justice and are informed by emergent Indigenous Australians critical theory. They are highly recommended to students interested in a professional career working alongside Indigenous Australians. This major is designed for those interested in, or who work in, community management and/or development positions. It aims to further Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination and self-management; extend the knowledge and skills required to bring about effective, culturally appropriate social change in Indigenous services. The major covers management theories and practices, community development processes, policy development and implementation issues. The major also incorporates Indigenous community management and development ethics and principles into practice, and strengthens leadership in the area. This major covers five main areas of study considered essential for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community management and development practitioners including management theories and practices, community development processes, policy development and implementation issues. It also covers an analysis of the main historical, social, political and economic factors and the ways in which they have influenced contemporary Indigenous society. In the final year, students undertake a major evaluation project using relevant approaches and criteria to further improve existing practice, processes and outcomes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander settings.

This major provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to empower and strengthen the well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach that encompasses Indigenous healing traditions. The broad aims of the major are to enable students to facilitate self-determination in health, including the social and emotional well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, families and individuals through the application of Indigenous knowledge and primary healthcare, and community development concepts and practices. The major will enable Indigenous primary healthcare practitioners to take leadership roles in the formulation and implementation of programs, in particular, through the development and application of Aboriginal Terms of Reference and Indigenous research skills. At the degree level, students learn to apply the principles and practices of Aboriginal Terms of Reference, primary healthcare, health promotion, and community development to program evaluation.
