Not offered in 2020The Master of Arts (Teaching English as a Second Language) is a 72-unit coursework program offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

The course is offered over four semesters full-time, or the equivalent part-time.

Structure

To qualify for the Master of Arts (Teaching English as a Second Language) a student must complete 72 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study:

  • 54 units of core topics
  • 18 units of topics in the field of education, with an emphasis on cognition and learning, languages and TESOL.

Entry requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  • analyse critically current theories in second language acquisition
  • review and analyse classroom issues related to Teaching English as a Second Language
  • demonstrate an understanding of second language teaching methodologies, including the ability to communicate them to a range of audiences
  • implement second language teaching methodologies to generate approaches to a range of classroom teaching scenarios
  • examine current literature in the field of education with an informed, critical perspective
  • evaluate and apply knowledge from a broad range of educational areas to TESOL theory and practice
  • demonstrate mastery in the knowledge and skills of TESOL to produce an extended research project.

Credit

Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language and/or the Graduate Diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language or an approved equivalent degree in a related field may receive credit upon admission to the Master of Arts (Teaching English as a Second Language).
