Language Studies

Not offered in 2020The Master of Language Studies is a 72-unit coursework program offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

The course may be taken over four semesters full-time, or the equivalent part-time.

To qualify for the Master of Language Studies a student must complete 72 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study:

49.5 units chosen from topics offered in:

• Group A - Language and Cultural Studies
• Group B - Applied Linguistics
• Group C - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

These topics should be chosen in consultation with the Course Coordinator.

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or an equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution, which includes a major, completed with a Credit or better Grade Point Average, in one or more of the following languages: French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish and Indonesian. However, under special circumstances and subject to specific conditions, the Dean (Education) may admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

On completion of the course, graduates will:

• demonstrate broad knowledge of Cultural Studies and/or Applied Linguistics Studies, relative to French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish, Indonesian, or TESOL, according to the area of specialisation chosen
• demonstrate highly advanced critical understanding of complex theories and principles underpinning the chosen area of Language Studies, and knowledge of current issues therein
• have successfully completed a research project in a specific area of Language Studies
• be able to communicate at a high level of competence in language skills intrinsic to specialised vocational applications
• demonstrate highly advanced level of knowledge and skills in relation to cross-cultural communication
• demonstrate understanding and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity at both local and global levels.

Credit

Students who have completed an Honours degree in French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish or Indonesian, or the Graduate Diploma in Language Teaching at Flinders University may be eligible to receive 36 units of credit. Those who have completed a Graduate Certificate in Language Teaching at Flinders University may be eligible to receive 18 units of credit. Credit may be granted, on application, for equivalent post-graduate or Honours studies, completed at another tertiary institution.
