About

The Master of Teaching (Primary) Program at the University of Newcastle provides a postgraduate pathway into a highly successful and rewarding career in teaching.

The program aims to develop graduates who are outstanding teachers who act professionally, ethically and effectively in their professional contexts;

who engage in critical enquiry into their practice and the contexts of their practice;

and who play a constructive leadership role in public discourse on and beyond education.

Graduates of this program will be eligible to seek employment as teachers of students from Kindergarten (Reception) to Year 6 in a wide range of national and international contexts, including in New South Wales Government, Catholic, and Independent school sectors.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the program students will have:

  • Demonstrate an advanced, integrated understanding of the complex contexts of education and their implications for contemporary schooling.
  • Demonstrate a sophisticated, specialised, holistic understanding of curriculum, assessment and pedagogy as they apply to diverse primary school contexts
  • Critically analyse, reflect on and synthesise complex concepts, problems, and theories in order to shape and implement curriculum responsive to the needs of diverse learners K-6
  • Engage critically with and in educational research such that research and inquiry inform and continuously shape evolving praxis.
  • Work constructively and innovatively to build generative relationships between school, home and community, and leverage these relationships to the benefit of their students.
  • Demonstrate ethical and well-informed professional judgement and high levels of professional autonomy, adaptability, responsibility and collegiality, in the application of expert educational knowledge to diverse school and classroom contexts.
