About

UWA's admission requirements for some postgraduate courses have changed for Semester 2, 2020 to facilitate student access to study during the COVID-19 situation.

In many cases, these changes may not be extended beyond 2020.

Contact Future Students for more information. The Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) Certificate is a response to industry demand. The term ECEC covers the age birth to age eight.Australia's enrolment rates of 4-year-olds in ECEC “increased by 20 percentage points or more, between 2005 and 2012” (OECD, 2014, p.

319).The figures show that, almost all of Australia's 3.7 million children 12 years of age and under, have participated in some form of ECEC prior to, or in conjunction with, the early years of formal schooling.

Attendance is greatest amongst 2 to 4 year olds — over 50 per cent of 2 to 4 year olds attend approved childcare (Australian Government, 2013, p.9).Government reforms have now mandated that those working in ECEC must have suitable qualifications in ECEC.

This course aims to target those working in ECEC to convert/ extend their primary teaching degrees to ECEC qualifications. The course consists of three academic units and a practical placement unit undertaken in a setting where children are aged 0-6 years. The academic aims are to build on qualified primary teacher's experience and knowledge of policy and pedagogy to cultivate leadership skills that “contributes to quality environments for children‘s learning and development” (Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority [ACECQA], 2012, p.

169).This qualification will enable graduates to teach in Early Childhood Education and Care settings.
