An interdisciplinary approach to problem solving is essential in this field, meaning that both the biological and earth sciences and studies in environmental planning and management are integrated. This course prepares students to deal with issues such as climate change, water resource management, sustainable natural resource use, and the rehabilitation of degraded or polluted environments.

Up to 80 per cent of the region's plants, marine fish and invertebrates are unique to the area. This makes WA the ideal living laboratory for studies in biological science. This course gives students an understanding of the molecular evolution, structure, physiology, reproduction, behaviour and ecology of organisms, and the skills to apply this knowledge to the management of natural systems and the species they support.

Enriched by inputs from genomic research, biotechnology is becoming a major force for development in all countries. Entwined with culture and socio-ethical values, biotechnology contributes to solving problems like food and water insecurity. The use of plants, animals and bacteria, enhanced by areas such as genetics and genomics gives rise to new food, fibre and chemical production routes, new strategies for environmental protection and stewardship as well as training the next generation of biomolecular scientists.This is a signature program designed to set us apart from other Universities by offering a thorough grounding in state-of-the-art biotechnology and combining this with training in enterprise and commercialisation. This includes developing the theory of genetics and molecular biology in parallel with skills training in practical techniques such as next generation genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, genetic engineering methods like CRISPR, and basic and advanced bioinformatics. Current streams include the application of biotechnology to generate aquatic products, services and energy, for environmental monitoring, protection, food security and reuse of waste, Genetics and Genomics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Bioethics and Commercialisation. An important market advantage stems from the incorporation of commercialisation and enterprise, business planning and company spin out, into the course.This cross-Faculty course draws on the expertise of staff in the UWA Business School, business angels and mentors in biotechnology spin outs to provide the academic and business skills graduates need to make a significant contribution to the biotechnology sector now and into the future. Graduates will be well positioned to pursue careers in international research laboratories, government agencies as well as the private sector.The core of the course draws on the expertise in Science and Business to provide a basis for skills training in biotechnology and combining this with skills in enterprise and commercialisation. In the Faculty of Science, key components are provided by the School of Molecular Sciences and UWA School of Agriculture and Environment. The Business School provides the required skills training in the commercialisation of biotechnological innovation.

Students are equipped with the analytical and practical skills they need to engage critically in development issues and debates from a interdisciplinary perspective, and to work across broad areas of development research, practice, and policy. The course begins with foundational units in development theory and case studies of development practice, before enabling students to specialise in one of a number of areas, including development in practice; politics of development; and economics of development.

The course focuses on recent advances in the life sciences, both in theory and practice. Emphasis is placed on critical thought, ethical and cultural issues and cross-disciplinary experimentation in art and science. Students have access to scientific laboratories, techniques and expertise. Students take both existing art and science units and a core of SymbioticA unit that include a major project and dissertation.Students who already hold a degree in science, the humanities or the visual arts and who wish to undertake interdisciplinary studies to engage with the crossover of art and science will find the degree develops their theoretical and practical skills in the production of biological art and its use in communicating critical thought, ethical and cultural issues to a variety of audiences.Completion of this degree can lead to wide and diverse career opportunities in the fields of art, science or social science, especially in positions dealing with issues of policy, communication and commentary, or in education. It offers opportunities for further academic pursuits including higher degree by research for the people who are interested in the holistic view of the effects of the sciences on our society and culture.

Contact Future Students for more information.The course is for students who have completed an undergraduate degree with a major in a biomedical science discipline. It provides these students with the opportunity to pursue advanced study in one of more of these disciplines. Emphasis is placed on cutting-edge research and its translation to healthy living and to clinical settings of diagnosis and treatment of disease. While research training within a specific discipline is available as part of the course (e.g. advanced laboratory skills and their application within an independent research project), this is not obligatory. Thus, students are able to focus on building their discipline-specific knowledge and an understanding of how this knowledge is applied. Regardless of the amount of research training undertaken, the course places strong emphasis on developing research literacy, with thorough interrogation of the scientific literature and its communication.
