Bachelor of Teaching

This is an exit only award. Students will be eligible to exit the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) and receive the award of the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) on completion of the 24 units listed. Students will be eligible to exit the Bachelor of Education (Primary) and receive the award of the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) on completion of any 24 units from the host course. Students will be eligible to exit the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and receive the award of the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) on completion of any 24 units from the host course.

Bachelor of Applied Sociology

Sociology is the one social science which embraces the whole range of human activities and this makes it a very wide field of study. As a result, it offers many opportunities for specialisation and these are reflected in the work of sociologists. The Bachelor of Applied Sociology combines core social science transferable skills with an emphasis on employability. In terms of title, structure and practical focus there is no equivalent course offered in Australia. The topic matter of the discipline is varied enabling students to explore a range of perspectives and methodologies used to understand social interactions and societal issues. The course consists of a combination of core and elective units, which thus provides students with the opportunity to develop core social science transferable skills whilst allowing the freedom to pursue areas of particular interest. The course draws on the University’s strengths as a distance education provider but also allows for students to take advantage of on-campus learning if preferred.

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)

CQUniversity’s Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) is an initial teacher education course usually studied over a period of four years. This course qualifies you for professional registration which is administered in Queensland by the Queensland College of Teachers. You will demonstrate evidence of meeting the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Graduate Career Stage) throughout the course of study. On successful completion of the course, you will be eligible for employment in primary schools from Prep to Year 6 and in early childhood settings (long day care settings & kindergartens/pre-prep) throughout Australia. In addition to building the professional knowledge and skills required to teach effectively, the course is designed to foster dispositions for engaging in and contributing to the teaching profession through a commitment to ongoing professional learning. The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) includes supervised assessable teaching practice in schools and other learning sites and an optional additional 20 days diploma practicum - 15 of which must be spent with children in the birth to 35 months group. You MUST complete a 15 day placement with children in the birth to 35 months group. This 15 day placement fulfils the requirements for Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) which stipulates that students must complete a minimum of 15 days with children in the birth to 35 months group. Professional practice blocks are included in each year of the course structure, and many opportunities for applying theoretical knowledge in practical ways have been embedded in each of the 32 units that make up the course. A key feature of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) is the embedded VET qualification: The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. On successful completion of the 9 first year units and the required diploma practicum and associated tasks, you will receive the Diploma as an interim award. The structure of the course also allows for recognition of prior learning. Applicants who already hold a recent Diploma qualification may be eligible for up to 6 units. The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) also includes a specialisation in English providing you with knowledge and skills in this specialisation area. Students located in the Rockhampton Diocese, if selected to be part of the program, can undertake a specialisation in Catholic Education allowing you to be accredited to teach in a Catholic School. As a graduate of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) you can progress to postgraduate study courses that are available for registered teachers through CQUniversity. To be eligible for teacher registration, students in this course are required to undertake and pass the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (ITE) prior to graduation.This test, referred to as LANTITE, is administered Nationally by the Australian Council of Education Research (ACER).

Bachelor of Education (Secondary)

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is an initial teacher education course usually studied over a period of four years. This course will qualify you for professional registration as a secondary school teacher. You will demonstrate evidence of meeting the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Graduate Career Stage) throughout the course of study. On successful completion of the course, you will be eligible for employment in secondary schools in two teaching areas. In this course you will complete 125 days of planned teaching practice in secondary schools. Professional practice blocks are included in each year of the course structure, culminating in a teaching internship. To graduate with a Bachelor of Education (Secondary), and consistent with external accreditation course requirements, you will complete: Professional Studies in Education (20 units equivalent) Discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogical studies (2 x 12 credit point units - i.e. 4 units equivalent) General Education Studies (11 x 6 credit point units) Professional Practice (5 x 6 credit point units) Discipline Studies (Discipline Teaching Area units) (12 units) 6 Discipline Teaching Area 1 units 6 Discipline Teaching Area 2 units Discipline Teaching Area units are selected from the relevant Minor listing in this handbook based on unit availabilities by the relevant school that hosts the discipline area. Discipline Teaching Areas you can choose from in this course include: Biology (including Year 7 - 10 Science) Business Chemistry (including Year 7 - 10 Science) English Geography Health and Physical Education (including Year 7 - 10 HPE and Year 11 - 12 Physical Education) History Home Economics and Hospitality Industrial Technology and Design Mathematics Psychology Please note: Study undertaken for each Discipline Teaching Area is equivalent to a total of three-quarters of a year of successful full-time higher education study, comprising sequential discipline study taken over three years as required by the National Program requirements. In this course, this equates to six units, with no more than two units at first-year level and no fewer than two units at third-year level. Annually, units are determined and advised by relevant Head of Course and/or Course Advisor from the various disciplines. To be eligible for teacher registration, students in this course are required to undertake and pass the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Educators (ITE) prior to graduation.

Bachelor of Education (Primary)

Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts course provides you with double qualifications and skills that are well regarded in both the private and public sectors. The Bachelor of Arts provides you with a multidisciplinary education that encourages you to gain knowledge in a range of humanities and social science disciplines. You will explore disciplines that study the way humans recognise, record and debate human practices, meanings and values. This will aid you in developing contemporary understandings both of the human condition and of how society operates. The Bachelor of Laws course satisfies the academic requirement for admission as a legal practitioner. Law graduates are also required to undergo a period of practical legal training before admission as a legal practitioner in Australia. A law degree will provide you with the qualifications to pursue a number of careers in the field of law, including solicitor, barrister, government legal officer, judicial officer, law academic, company director, in-house counsel, diplomat and politician.

Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours)

Speech pathology is an exciting career that will enable you the opportunity to work with people across the lifespan. As a speech pathologist, you will work with other health professionals, in a variety of settings, to help children and adults who have communication and/or swallowing difficulties. Your role in assessing and managing these essential skills will promote positive well-being for the people with whom you work. In this course, you will learn how communication and swallowing typically develop. You will assess these skills in children and adults to determine whether or not they are having difficulties. You will learn to analyse the results of these assessments within the context of a person's health and functioning so you can plan an evidenced-based intervention that best meets the person’s needs. You will undertake extensive Work-Integrated Learning opportunities at CQUniversity's Health Clinic, and off-campus at community and clinical sites in and outside of Queensland, where you will observe and work directly with children and adults with communication and/or swallowing difficulties. This will allow you to consolidate the content and theory you are learning in class with your developing clinical skills. Throughout these experiences, you will exercise critical thinking and self-reflection, allowing you to develop lifelong learning skills. At the completion of this course, you will be qualified as an entry-level speech pathologist, ready to work with children and/or adults with a diverse range of communication and swallowing difficulties, in a variety of contexts.

Bachelor of Podiatry Practice (Honours)

The Bachelor of Podiatry Practice (Honours) course will provide knowledge and equip you with skills that will allow you to assess, diagnose and treat disorders of the foot and lower limb of people of all ages. In this course, you will have the opportunity to learn about human anatomy, physiology, pathology, wound care, podiatric therapeutics and conduct a research study. You will have at least 1000 hours of hands-on experience treating real patients in the CQUniversity Health Clinic and at various off-campus clinical sites. You will conduct gait and movement analyses in our biomechanical laboratories and you will also have the opportunity to fabricate custom made foot orthotic devices in our fully equipped orthotic laboratories. You will have the opportunity to work with experienced practitioners to ensure your clinical management is based on sound clinical reasoning and is evidence based. The course will equip you with extensive theoretical knowledge and clinical experience that will provide you with the necessary advanced skills to commence professional practice as a podiatrist in a variety of clinical settings.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours)

Physiotherapy is a highly respected and evidence-based allied health profession. Physiotherapists work in partnership with patients and their families/carers, together with medical practitioners, nurses and health professionals, to assess, diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of health conditions and movement disorders. The Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) provides high quality and contemporary tertiary education that includes extensive theoretical, clinical, and research experiences to develop highly competent and autonomous Physiotherapy graduates with advanced knowledge and skills. The Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) is a four-year degree consisting of 26 units and upon successful completion you will be eligible for registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia as a Physiotherapist. There is a strong demand for Physiotherapists with employment opportunities in hospital, community and occupational settings. Physiotherapists provide services that extend from health promotion to injury minimisation, acute care, rehabilitation, chronic disease management, occupational health, research, and education.

Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours)

Occupational therapy is a dynamic person-centred health profession. Practitioners support people of all ages, and their families, to engage in the occupations and activities of daily life, to optimise physical and mental health and wellbeing. Occupational therapists must be registered to practice in Australia, and may work in a range of government, educational, and industry settings, as well as in private enterprise, throughout the world. The aim of this accredited Occupational Therapy Course is to develop highly competent and autonomous occupational therapy graduates, skilled in inter-professional and person-/family-centred occupational therapy practice. To achieve this, the course is informed by contemporary research and occupational therapy theories and models. It is taught by occupational therapists and other suitably qualified professionals who are skilled and experienced in the diverse areas of occupational therapy practice. Although it addresses local, national, and global community needs, a particular emphasis is on training graduates to work in rural and regional communities. The occupational therapy course aligns seamlessly with CQUniversity's focus on social innovation and status as Australia’s first Ashoka U Changemaker Campus. As a student in this course, you will learn to (a) recognise aspects relevant to the person, the environment, and occupations that represent strengths and barriers to occupational engagement, and (b) address these, to support people to achieve their goals. You will engage in a minimum of 1000 hours of clinical practice, including full-time placements, for which you will need to meet a number of prerequisite requirements (e.g., obtaining a blue card, having a number of immunisations). In your final year, you will further develop your skills by planning and implementing a small community-based research or evaluation project.
