Every industry is using the increasing availability of large volumes of data to grow - from predicting weather patterns and optimising harvesting in agriculture, to improving patient diagnosis and treatment in the health industry, to enhancing the management of remote infrastructure in mining. Central to harnessing the power of data to drive innovation is the Data Scientist. The Data Science major is a multidisciplinary major with fields of study in computing, statistics, emerging internet technologies and media studies. Foundational studies in programming and statistics from the basis of higher level studies in data mining, data security and computer simulation. The major builds students’ capacity to extract, analyse and visualise large volumes of data and communicate analytical outcomes to a range of audiences. Graduates from the major will be equipped to enter a range of industries where data science is key to data-driven innovation. MJRU-CYBSE v.1 Cyber Security Major (B Comp)

This major provides coverage of the key concepts and challenges in data and resource protection and computer software security. There is a focus on both the high level (e.g. cryptography theory and data access policy development and security program management) and low level practical (e.g. computer forensics, network intrusion detection and incident handling) aspects of computer security. The addition of programming techniques differentiates this major from more policy-based options. Course Accreditation Status Will request provisional accreditation from ACS on approval. Career Opportunities Graduates may be employed in one of a number of roles relating to computer or network security on either the red (penetration testing) or blue (target defense) teams. In addition they can join programming teams as security specialists and have good knowledge of security policy. Students select their pathway of study in creative advertising and/or graphic design within the Creative Advertising and Graphic Design major. This programme provides students with a creatively expansive experience to express their ingenuity, culture, intellectual abilities and skills through creating relevant creative advertising and graphic design solutions. Project based activities develop design processes that embed professional standards with individual thoughts, concepts and ideals. Components of the third year programme are self-directed and lead to a portfolio, exhibition and publication of work. This design major is directed toward employment outcomes as a designer or practitioner in the creative industries sectors. Higher study directions include areas of specialisation in design, research and/or education. Students studying Creative Advertising and Graphic Design as their primary major will study their first year with the STRU-BADAA Design and Art First Year Stream. MJRU-COMPS v.1 Computer Science Major (B Comp)

The Computer Science major focuses on the knowledge required to build operating systems and design new programming languages. Computer Science professionals design the computing technology that we all use rather than customised software for specific clients. The stream covers in depth software design and algorithm analysis as well as the aspects of artificial intelligence, computer communications, programming language design, databases and problem classification. The major will prepare students for the areas of Information and Communication Technologies stated to be most in demand for the positions considered to be the most difficult to fill. Course Accreditation Status Will be submitted to the ACS for provisional accreditation upon approval. Career Opportunities Graduates are suitable for roles in software design and development, as well as specialist roles relating to artificial intelligence and software aspects of robotics. The emphasis on problem solving and algorithms mean that graduates of this major are very suited to undertaking research and tackling some of the most difficult problems in computing. Completion of this major will provide students with the ability to communicate effectively in Chinese (Mandarin), with a focus on the use of the Chinese language and an understanding of Chinese culture, society and business practices in China. Students commence with CHIN1000 Beginning Chinese, or a more advanced unit depending on the student's level of Chinese, after consultation with the Chinese teaching staff. Students studying the Chinese Major as their primary major will study their first year with the STRU-BALAN Language First Year Stream. They use sophisticated instruments for the analysis of raw materials and finished products. The Chemistry Major provides a body of knowledge in chemistry and a range of skills necessary for a career in a modern analytical or industrial laboratory. These skills are gained in Curtin’s laboratories that are amongst the best equipped in Australia. The Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) opens up many career opportunities. Employers appreciate the problem solving and analytical skills of Curtin graduates, and the applied nature of the course. The degree also forms a wide range of destinations where our graduates are employed in Research and Development, Technical Services, or Quality Control Laboratories. Students are able to choose from the following specialisations: Analytical and Forensic Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, Geochemistry and Materials Chemistry. The Major provides students with the knowledge and practical skills to plan and manage human activities while conserving the marine and coastal environments. The emphasis of the course material is on science and management techniques for the aquatic environment. Fields of study include biology, ecotoxicology, sustainable aquaculture, environmental impact assessment, aquatic resource management, marine taxonomy and biodiversity, geographic information systems (GIS), geomorphology and the physical environment of the coastal zone. The curriculum focuses on the Australian coastal zone, however, international case studies are incorporated. This degree is an opportunity to meet the need for increased research into coastal environment while managing the sustainability of the current and future anthropogenic activities within the coastal zone.
