Many of the advances in plant and animal health rely on the understanding of both chemistry and biology. This Major will provide graduates with skills and knowledge to work in this exciting interface. Students who choose to pursue the Biochemistry Major commence their study program with a range of science units designed to provide them with foundation skills and knowledge on which to build and specialise their degree. The second and third year program consists of a set of core units which develop skills essential to all practising biochemists. Students have the option to augment their core units of study in the Biochemistry Major with concurrent studies in either a 'chemistry' or 'environment' stream.

Mathematics is the study of concepts such as quantity, structure, space and change and to use these concepts to model and describe the behaviour of real world complex systems. It has been described as the science of patterns, whether found in numbers, space, science, engineering, computers, imaginary abstractions or elsewhere. Through abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics evolved from counting, calculation, measurement and the systemic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Today, mathematics is used in most fields, including technology, natural science, engineering, medicine, finance and the social sciences such as sociology and psychology. This Industrial and Applied Mathematics Major is designed to provide students with the skills in mathematics, engineering and computing and to apply them to problems arising in business, industry and government. The major includes units in advanced calculus and linear algebra that provide foundation knowledge as well as units in modelling and optimisation, network design and analysis, logistics, supply chain networks, transportation networks, computational mathematics, statistics and probability. Industry-based units and a work experience program will help students to experience real applications. Graduates are well equipped with the tools to address the key problems that need to be solved to improve the efficiency and productivity of business and industry. Career Opportunities Employment prospects are good as mathematics graduates have high level problem-solving skill. Mathematics can be a stepping stone to a wide and diverse career. This major introduces students to the complementary fields of anthropology and sociology. This major enables students to understand how contemporary local, regional and national cultures are affected by, and react to, processes of global change such as industrialisation, urbanisation, increasing inter-ethnic contacts, environmental transformation and new modes of communication. Students studying Anthropology and Sociology as their primary major will study their first year with the STRU-BAMCC Media, Culture and Creative Arts First Year Stream. Major Overview Note Students choosing this major within the Bachelor of Arts degree will also choose another major or an elective stream. Choosing a second major allows students to study in an additional discipline area. Choosing an elective stream allows students to undertake further study in the discipline of their first major or choose from a variety of units from around the University.
